Increasing renal arterial pressure activates at least 3 antihypertensive mechanisms: reduced renin release, pressure natriuresis, and release of a putative renal medullary depressor hormone. To examine the role of renal medullary perfusion in these mechanisms, we tested the effects of the infusion of norepinephrine, either infusion into the renal medullary interstitium or intravenous infusion, ...

Effects of acute systemic hypoxia on the cardiovascular system (CYS) and respiration of spontaneously breathing cats were studied in two conditions. 1): Hypoxic air (6-8% 02 in N2) was given to the animal to induce systemic hypoxia for 20 minutes. Hyperventilation at this condition lowered arterial C02 tension (PaC02 hypocapnia). 2): In the second run, induction of hypocapnia was prevented ...

Arterial blood pressure measurements were obtained from 158 healthy Irish wolfhounds using the oscillometric technique to establish reference values for the breed. In contrast to other sight hounds, Irish wolfhounds have low arterial blood pressure. Mean systolic pressure for the group was 116.0 mm Hg. Mean diastolic pressure was 69.2 mm Hg, and the mean value for mean arterial pressure was 87....

To understand more fully the role of the arterial baroreceptor reflex on systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance, we studied the influence of the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex control system on the entire systemic and pulmonary arterial pressure-flow relationships. Ten pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs, whose carotid sinuses were isolated, were used in a preparation in which the right and ...

Objectives Our study aims to provide basic scientific data on the importance of obesity management in middle-aged Korean women by analyzing its effects on blood pressure and arterial stiffness. In addition, we examined the correlations of these two parameters. Methods The study participants were 40 middle-aged female volunteers, who were classified into obesity group (n = 20) and normal weigh...

The feasibility of using a Finapres device to reproduce the beat to beat signal of arterial blood pressure in eight neonates was assessed and compared with intra-arterial measurement of arterial blood pressure in the umbilical artery, using a catheter. The two methods gave similar results. Continuous recording of arterial blood pressure in neonates using Finapres is feasible and reliable.

Arterial stiffening is the principal cause of increasing systolic pressure with advancing years and in patients with arterial hypertension. It is associated with progressive arterial dilation and is due to degeneration of the arterial wall, probably as a consequence of repetitive cyclic stress; it increases systolic pressure directly by increasing amplitude of the pressure wave generated by a g...

The purpose of this study was to assess the chronic effects of lesions of the nucleus tractus solitarii on the cardiovascular activity of rats. Arterial pressure and heart rate were recorded in conscious, unrestrained rats 7-216 days following placement of electrolytic lesions in the nucleus tractus solitarii. To assess the impact of environmental stimuli on the mean level and lability of the m...

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether diabetes and regular hemodialysis are associated with false elevation of ankle systolic blood pressure and ankle-brachial systolic pressure index (ABI) because of their arterial calcification in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We recruited 269 Japanese patients who underwent endovascular therapy for CLI. Ankle systolic b...
