Isolation of Legionella pneumophila from a transtracheal aspirate was achieved by using simple in vitro culture methods. Clinical microbiologists should routinely culture for this organism from appropriate body fluids obtained from normally sterile areas.

A 19-year-old female presented with cardiac tamponade complicated by acute renal failure. Salmonella agona was cultured from pericardial aspirate after repeated pericardiocentesis in several sites. Treatment with ampicillin and intermittent haemodialysis led to complete recovery.

The use of endoscopic ultrasonography has allowed for improved detection and pathologic analysis of fine needle aspirate material for pancreatic lesion diagnosis. The molecular analysis of KRAS has further improved the clinical sensitivity of preoperative analysis. For this reason, the use of highly analytical sensitive and specific molecular tests in the analysis of material from fine needle a...

The role of gastroesophageal reflux and micro-aspiration as a trigger of airways hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in patients with asthma is controversial. The role of acid reflux and aspiration as a direct cause of AHR in normal subjects is also unclear. We speculated that aspiration of a weak acid with a pH (1.8) equivalent to the upper range of typical gastric contents would lead to AHR in naive mi...

Like formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissues, archived bone marrow aspirate slides are an abundant and untapped resource of biospecimens that could enable retrospective molecular studies of disease. Historically, RNA obtained from slides is limited in utility because of their low quality and highly fragmented nature. MicroRNAs are small (≈ 22 nt) non-coding RNA that regulate gene expres...

An infant with congenital leukemia in complete remission (CR1) received an unrelated donor umbilical cord blood cell transplant from a one-HLA disparate donor. The conditioning regimen consisted of thiotepa, busulfan and cyclophosphamide. GVHD prophylaxis consisted of tacrolimus and mini-methotrexate. Engraftment occurred and a bone marrow aspirate obtained on day 28 showed 100% donor cells. Th...

The results of body fluid and surface cultures from 148 preterm infants less than 33 weeks gestational age obtained routinely on admission to a neonatal intensive care unit were reviewed. The aim was to determine the occurrence of congenital bacterial sepsis in this population and to examine whether surface cultures yielded information helpful in management. Gastric aspirate and umbilical, nasa...

Background. This work compares the osteoblastic behaviour of a bone marrow (BM) aspirate and a prepared BM concentrate of nucleated cells associated with a glass reinforced hydroxyapatite composite (GRHC) in a microporous pellet formulation. Methods. BM aspirate (30 mL) was collected during 3 orthopedic surgical procedures, and a concentration system was used to achieve 3 rapid preparations of ...

Stent implantation into aortocoronary saphenous vein grafts (SVG) releases particulate debris and soluble vasoactive mediators, for example, serotonin. We now analyzed effects of the soluble mediators released into the coronary arterial blood during stent implantation on vasomotion of isolated rat epicardial coronary artery segments and on coronary flow and left ventricular developed pressure i...

BACKGROUND Disseminated tuberculosis (TB) is a life-threatening condition which is often a challenge to diagnose. When to use bone marrow biopsies to diagnose disseminated TB in paediatrics is always a dilemma, from both a clinical and laboratory perspective, as there are no clear guidelines. Our study primarily aims to evaluate the role of routine bone marrow biopsies, and to compare periphera...
