In this paper we extend the result of [6] on the characteristic of convexity of Orlicz spaces to the more general case of Musielak-Orlicz spaces over a non-atomic measure space. Namely, the characteristic of convexity of these spaces is computed whenever the Musielak-Orlicz functions are strictly convex.

We report on spectroscopic observations of periodic comet 9P/Tempel 1 by the Alice ultraviolet spectrograph on the Rosetta spacecraft in conjunction with NASA’s Deep Impact mission. Our objectives were to measure an increase in atomic and molecular emissions produced by the excavation of volatile sub-surface deceased May 11, 2005

We describe the optimum detection procedure to follow in order to measure by atomic interferometry the number of photons present in a cavity by using a Quantum nondemolition scheme. The method we discuss is the one recently introduced by Brune et al.

We study limit laws for return time processes defined on infinite conservative ergodic measure preserving dynamical systems. Especially for the critical cases with purely atomic limiting distribution we derive distorted processes posessing non-degenerated limits. For these processes also large deviation asymptotics are stated. The Farey map is used as an illustrating example giving new insides ...

Let D be an integral domain. We investigate two invariants ω(D, x) and ω(D) which measure how far an x ∈ D is from being prime and how far an atomic integral domain D is from being a UFD, respectively. We give a new characterization of number fields with class number two. We also study asymptotic versions of these two invariants.

We measure the decoherence of a spatially separated atomic superposition due to spontaneous photon scattering. We observe a qualitative change in decoherence versus separation as the number of scattered photons increases, and verify quantitatively the decoherence rate constant in the many-photon limit. Our results illustrate an evolution of decoherence consistent with general models developed f...

We consider volume-preserving perturbations of the time-one map of the geodesic flow of a compact surface with negative curvature. We show that if the Liouville measure has Lebesgue disintegration along the center foliation then the perturbation is itself the time-one map of a smooth volume-preserving flow, and that otherwise the disintegration is necessarily atomic.

We report the implementation of quantum dense coding on individual atomic qubits with the use of two trapped 9Be+ ions. The protocol is implemented with a complete Bell measurement that distinguishes the four operations used to encode two bits of classical information. We measure an average transmission fidelity of 0.85(1) and determine a channel capacity of 1.16(1).

An analytical model is developed of the interaction of the cantilever tip of an atomic force microscope with the sample surface that treats the cantilever and sample as independent systems coupled by a nonlinear force acting between the cantilever tip and a volume element of the sample surface. To maintain equilibrium, the volume element is subjected to a restoring force from the remainder of t...
