The Bacillus sonorensis L12 draft genome sequence is approximately 4,647,754 bp in size with a G+C content of 45.2%. Over 86% of the genome contains protein-encoding genes, including several gene clusters for de novo biosynthesis of the nonribosomal lipopeptides iturin, bacitracin, and fengycin, which could mean that the strain exhibits antifungal effects.

Isolation of Haemophilus influenzae from specimens contaminated with upper respiratory tract microbial flora was attempted with three different media: enriched chocolate agar, chocolate agar plus vancomycin, and chocolate agar plus vancomycin, bacitracin, and clindamycin. Recovery rates of H. influenzae from 852 pediatric pharyngeal swab specimens were 6.0, 28.5, and 59.9%, respectively.

Bacillus spp. are widely used as feed additives and probiotics. However, there is limited information on their resistance to various antibiotics, and there is a growing concern over the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. The MIC for 8 antibiotics was determined for 85 Bacillus species strains, Bacillus subtilis subsp. subtilis (n = 29), Bacillus licheniformis (n = 38), and Bacillus sonore...

We report here the draft genome sequence of Paenibacillus polymyxa KF-1, which exhibits excellent antimicrobial activity. It encodes the synthase of bacitracin, kalimantacin, bacillomycin, iturin, fusaricidin, tridecaptin, and pelgipeptin and biosynthetic pathways of antiviral curldan and levan polysaccharides. Also, a novel prophage is involved in this genome that contains endolysin-encoding g...

Addition of the antibiotic cerulenin to cultures lowered the minimal effective concentration of penicillin G or methicillin required to produce bacterial lysis and killing. This effect was most pronounced at subinhibitory antibiotic concentrations. Cerulenin had no significant effects on lysis or killing induced in the presence of D-cycloserine, fosfomycin, bacitracin, or vancomycin.

Clostridium difficile isolates from a 2004 outbreak in Québec, Canada, were all found to be susceptible to metronidazole, vancomycin, rifampin, and meropenem but resistant to bacitracin, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin, and most (>80%) were resistant to ceftriaxone, clarithromycin, gatifloxacin, and moxifloxacin. The predominant NAP1 isolates were susceptible to clindamycin, while t...

Results: Gender, animal density, and concurrent disease were not associated with death due to HBS. Rates of death due to HBS were higher for pigs finished during the summer than for those finished in the winter. Rates of death due to HBS were lower in pigs fed rations containing bacitracin methylene disalicylate or chlortetracycline than in pigs on rations containing virginiamycin or no antibio...

This thesis embodies the work carried out using free Mycobacterium sp. cells as whole cell biocatalysts for androstenedione (AD) production from (3-sitosterol by selective side chain cleavage. While studying sitosterol to AD biotransformation in aqueous medium, different strategies were tried to improve the production of AD. In the first step, a mutant strain of Mycobacterium sp DSMZ 2966 was d...
