INTRODUCTION Envenomation by scorpion stings is a major public health problem in numerous tropical countries because of its frequent incidence and potential severity. Approximately 1,900 species of scorpions are known in the world, and at least 130 of these have been described in Brazil. METHODS This work reports on 3 child deaths caused by Tityus stigmurus stings and characterizes epidemiolo...
Scorpionism is a public health problem in several regions of the world. The highest mortality, with over 1000 deaths per year, has been reported in Mexico. We analysed the significance of climatological variables to predict the incidence of scorpion stings in humans in the state of Colima (Mexico) for the years 2000-2001. The pluvial precipitation (mm), the evaporation (mm), and the mean, maxim...
argyrophilic staining of nucleolar organizer regions (agnor) has been considered to be useful in the diagnosis and prognostic evaluation of different cutaneous tumors. in order to evaluate the role of the agnor technique in discriminating aggressive from non-aggressive basal cell carcinoma (bcc), paraffin-embedded histologic sections from 30 cases of aggressive bcc (bcc2) and 30 cases of non-ag...
Olindias sambaquiensis, known as agua viva, is an endemic hydromedusa that is distributed from latitude 23 degrees to 42 degrees south in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean and is known to cause severe stings. This is the first report of the use of vinegar in disarming O sambaquiensis nematocysts and includes preliminary observations on its use in managing the stings of hydromedusae.
Wasp stings can present in various ways, ranging from mild self-limiting illness to severe multi organ failure with a potentially fatal outcome. We report a case of multiple wasp stings leading to acute renal failure needing prolonged dialysis support and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome.
many reports have indicated the medical importance of animal poisons in iran. the significance numbers of iranians are injured from high endemic to sporadic, by venomous snakes, scorpions, wasps, bees, fire and velvet ants, spiders and backswimmer bugs, so their nuisance prevention is an important task.
Wasp stings are ubiquitous worldwide and generally cause self-limiting local reaction. Occasionally more serious systemic reactions such as anaphylaxis, rhabdomyolysis, and intravascular hemolysis may occur, especially with multiple stings. Although exceedingly rare, neurologic complications of the wasp sting have been described. We report a case of allergic encephalitis with gelastic status ep...
The insect order of Hymenoptera includes bees, hornets, wasps and fire-ants. Their stings are not usually life threatening, causing mainly local reactions and rarely anaphylaxis. This is a report of an 18 month old child who survived after an unusually severe envenomation, resulting in encephalopathy, hypertension, coagulopathy, intra-vascular hemolysis, hepatic and renal failure, following mul...
Anaphylaxis to animal bites and stings poses a significant medical risk of vascular or respiratory reactions that vary according to the patient's response and nature of the insult. Emergency Physicians frequently see patients who complain of an allergic reaction to an animal bite or sting. Although Hymenoptera stings, specifically those of wasps, bees, and hornets, account for the majority of t...
