Modern dressings such as hydrocolloids, gels, and foams are typically more expensive than traditional dressings such as gauze. However, if modern dressings require fewer changes, the overall cost of treatment may be lower despite the higher initial purchase price. If healing rates are comparable or better, modern dressings also may be cost-effective. A 4-week, prospective, randomized clinical t...
The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on the benefits and harms of advanced wound dressings on wound healing, mortality, quality of life, pain, condition of the wound bed, and adverse events for patients with chronic venous leg ulcers as compared with treatment with compression alone. We searched for primary studies in the databases of MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochra...
The application of moist heat in an autoclave is the best method of sterilizing dressings. In order to kill the most resistant pathogenic spores they must be exposed for at least 20 minutes to saturated steam at 1210 C. (Ministry of Health, 1955). At this temperature pure steam exerts a pressure of 15 lb./sq. in. The steam should be dry but at the phase boundary between liquid and vapour, so th...
The effectiveness of three types of hemostatic dressings, QuikClot Gauze, ChitoGauze PRO and Celox Gauze, was evaluated in nine pigs. The results indicated a strong influence of all examined dressings on porcine femoral muscle tissue evaluated 24 hours after direct contact. A histopathological analysis revealed pathological changes in muscle tissue specimens collected from all the animals.
Topical silver agents and dressings are used to control infection and promote healing in chronic wounds, but reviews published from 2006 to 2011 found heterogeneous results regarding their effectiveness. A scoping review was conducted to examine the extent, range, and nature of research activity surrounding chronic wound care that employed silver-impregnated dressings; identify research gaps in...
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness and value of prophylactic 5-layer foam sacral dressings to prevent hospital-acquired pressure injury rates in acute care settings. DESIGN Retrospective observational cohort. SAMPLE AND SETTING We reviewed records of adult patients 18 years or older who were hospitalized at least 5 days across 38 acute care hospitals of the U...
Purpose: To investigate the effect of sterile and clean dressing techniques on wound management in a Chinese hospital, and to compare their impact on wound healing and the cost of the dressing materials with respect to postoperative surgical wounds. Methods: A total of 130 patients, comprising 70 (53.8 %) males and 60 (46.2 %) females, who had undergone surgery in The Affiliated Hospital of Cha...
verting colostomies are not required either to achieve wound closure or to prevent wound infection. Diversion of the fecal stream usually results in significant anal stenosis, which then requires surgical correction. Skin Grafts. After a burn wound has been excised, optimal closure is accomplished by of cutaneous autografts. However, this is possible only when (a) the wound bed is unequivocally...
A hydrogel is a water-insoluble three-dimensional polymer network that has the ability to absorb body fluids in biological environment. Such formed through chemical crosslinking mechanisms such as optical polymerization, enzymatic reactions and physical temperature pH dependent processes ionic crosslinking. Physical hydrogels are weak secondary force by covalent forces. Various polymers of natu...
