The physical behavior of a class of mesoscopic models for multiphase flows is analyzed in details near interfaces. In particular, an extended pseudopotential method is developed, which permits to tune the equation of state and surface tension independently of each other. The spurious velocity contributions of this extended model are shown to vanish in the limit of high grid refinement and/or hi...

Based on the no-slip boundary condition for walls at rest for the lattice Boltzmann Bathnagar-Gross-Krook method by J.C.G. Verschaeve [10], a no-slip boundary condition for walls with a tangential movement is derived. Numerical tests verify that the present boundary condition is second order accurate and stable for relaxation frequencies close to two.

In this paper we study the numerical passage from the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without cut-off to the Fokker-Planck-Landau equation in the so-called grazing collision limit. To this aim we derive a Fourier spectral method for the non cut-off Boltzmann equation in the spirit of [21, 23]. We show that the kernel modes that define the spectral method have the correct grazing collis...

BACKGROUND Systolic blood flow has been simulated in the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. The simulations were carried out using two different computational hemodynamic methods: the finite element method to solve the Navier Stokes equations and the lattice Boltzmann method. RESULTS We have validated the lattice Boltzmann method for systolic flows by comparing the velocity a...

We consider the flow of a dilute gas around a macroscopic heavy object. The state of the gas is described by an extended Boltzmann equation where the interactions between the gas molecules and the object are taken into account in computing the rate of change of the distribution function of the gas. We then show that the extended Boltzmann is equivalent to the usual Boltzmann equation, supplemen...

To develop and analyze new computational techniques for the Boltzmann equation based on model or approximation adaptivity, it is imperative to have disposal of a compliant model problem that displays the essential characteristics of the Boltzmann equation and that admits the extraction of highly accurate reference solutions. For standard collision processes, the Boltzmann equation itself fails ...

In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann method for convectiondiffusion equation with source term is applied directly to solve some important nonlinear complex equations, including nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, coupled NLS equations, Klein-Gordon equation and coupled Klein-Gordon-Schrödinger equations, by using complex-valued distribution function and relaxation time. Detailed simulations o...

Two-dimensional decaying turbulence is simulated using the lattice Boltzmann method with the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision operator. The simulation results are analyzed in the spectral space and the auto power spectral density functions of the one-particle distribution functions are presented. It is shown that both the equilibrium and the non-equilibrium parts of the distribution functions ha...

Learning in restricted Boltzmann machine is typically hard due to the computation of gradients of log-likelihood function. To describe the network state statistics of the restricted Boltzmann machine, we develop an advanced mean field theory based on the Bethe approximation. Our theory provides an efficient message passing based method that evaluates not only the partition function (free energy...
