The persistence of Bordetella pertussis and B. parapertussis within vaccinated populations and the reemergence of associated disease highlight the need to better understand protective immunity. The present study examined host immunity to bordetellae and addressed potential concerns about the mouse model by using a comparative approach including the closely related mouse pathogen B. bronchisepti...

The objective of this study was preliminary evaluation of IgM cross-reaction in sera collected from children hospitalized because of suspected legionellosis. Sera with positive IgM results to L. pneumophila sgs1-7, B. pertussis or with simultaneous detection of IgM antibodies to L. pneumophila sgs1-7 and B. pertussis, or IgM to L. pneumophila sgs1-7 and M. pneumoniae in routine tests, were sele...

Three comparative assays were performed seeking to improve the sensitivity of the diagnosis of Bordetella bronchiseptica infection analyzing swine nasal swabs. An initial assay compared the recovery of B. bronchiseptica from swabs simultaneously inoculated with B. bronchiseptica and some interfering bacteria, immersed into three transport formulations (Amies with charcoal, trypticase soy broth ...

A previous study found that alcaligin siderophore production by Bordetella bronchiseptica strain RB50 is Bvg repressed. In contrast, we report that alcaligin production by RB50 does not require Bvg phenotypic phase modulation and that isogenic Bvg(Con) and Bvg(-) phase-locked mutants both produce alcaligin in response to iron starvation.

The temperature-sensitive mutant strain, ts-S34, of Bordetella bronchiseptica, which cannot grow at or above the temperature 34 degrees C, has been studied in guinea pigs. The strain grew to moderate numbers in the nasal turbinates but did not grow in the lungs. Guinea pigs given strain ts-S34 developed moderate levels of serum antibody. This strain also induced very high resistance to subseque...

We used multilocus variable-number tandem repeat analysis and multiple antigen sequence typing to characterize isolates of Bordetella pertussis strains circulating in Denmark during periods with and without pertussis vaccination coverage. Our results show substantial shifts in the B. pertussis population over time and a reduction in genetic diversity. These changes might have resulted from the ...

Identifying the major routes of disease transmission and reservoirs of infection are needed to increase our understanding of disease dynamics and improve disease control. Despite this, transmission events are rarely observed directly. Here we had the unique opportunity to study natural transmission of Bordetella bronchiseptica--a directly transmitted respiratory pathogen with a wide mammalian h...
