Spirochete diversity in acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans lesions in a closely defined central European site was compared to that in the local vector population, in human erythema migrans lesions, and in cerebrospinal fluid by amplifying and sequencing a segment of the gene of outer surface protein A directly from sampled tissues. Borrelia garinii, Borrelia afzelii, and Borrelia burgdorferi a...

To explore the tick distribution and prevalence of Borrelia in Zhejiang Province, we performed a survey in nine sites. A total of 447 adult ticks of 11 species were captured and the dominant tick species were Haemaphysalis longicornis and Ixodes sinensis and the abundance of tick species in different areas varied significantly. Overall, 4.70% of the ticks were polymerase chain reaction (PCR) po...

Sixty-three Borrelia burgdorferi isolates recovered from Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in 17 locations in The Netherlands and three Dutch human skin isolates were characterized by rRNA gene restriction fragment length polymorphism, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting (immunoblotting). All three human isolates belonged to B. burgdorferi group VS461. O...

Data from European studies indicate that in humans, particular Borrelia burgdorferi genospecies may be associated with specific clinical manifestations of Lyme disease. Infections by B. burgdorferi sensu stricto tend to lead to arthritic symptoms, whereas infections by B. garinii appear to cause neurologic complications. Late cutaneous manifestations (acrodermatitis) appear to be associated wit...

To determine whether human Borrelia miyamotoi infection occurs in the far-western United States, we tested archived sera from northwestern California residents for antibodies to this emerging relapsing fever spirochete. These residents frequently were exposed to I. pacificus ticks in a region where B. miyamotoi tick infection has been reported. We used a two-step B. miyamotoi rGlpQ assay and a ...

Records from 182 cases of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) were reviewed. In confirmed cases, there was febrile illness, and spirochetes were identified on peripheral blood preparations. In probable cases, there were clinical features of TBRF and either the same exposure as a confirmed case or serological (indirect fluorescent antibody test and western blotting [WB]) evidence of infection with...

Borrelia burgdorferi isolates obtained from numerous locations and from different hosts in North Carolina, were compared to previously characterized strains of the Lyme disease spirochete and other Borrelia spp. The spirochete isolates were confirmed to be B. burgdorferi sensu stricto based on immunofluorescence (IFA) using a monoclonal antibody to outer surface protein A (Osp A [H5332]) and po...

The Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, causes persistent mammalian infection despite the development of vigorous immune responses against the pathogen. To examine spirochetal phenotypes that dominate in the hostile immune environment, the mRNA transcripts of four prototypic surface lipoproteins, decorin-binding protein A (DbpA), outer surface protein C (OspC), BBF01, and VlsE, were ...

This study describes the detection of Borrelia garinii and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.) in Brazilian individuals using PCR and DNA sequencing. Our results suggest that these species are emerging pathogens in this country, and additional studies are necessary to determine the epidemiological characteristics of this disease in Brazil.
