Breathing frequency increases at the onset of movement in a wide rage of mammals including adult humans. Moreover, the magnitude of increase in the rate of breathing appears related to the rate of the rhythmic movement. We determined whether human infants show the same type of response when supported to step on a treadmill. Twenty infants (ages 9.7 +/- 1.2 mo) participated in trials consisting ...

BACKGROUND Poor symptom control is common in asthma. Breathing training exercises may be an effective adjunct to medication; it is therefore important to understand facilitators and barriers to uptake of breathing training exercises. AIMS To gain insight into patients' perceptions of breathing training exercises designed to help control asthma symptoms. METHODS Semi-structured think-aloud i...

Amphibious crabs, Cardisoma guanhumi, were acclimated to breathing either air or water and exposed to altered levels of oxygen and/or carbon dioxide in the medium. Hypercapnia (22, 36 and 73 torr CO(2)) stimulated a significant hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR) in both groups of crabs, with a much greater effect on scaphognathite frequency (Deltaf(SC)=+700%) in air-breathing crabs than wa...

The purpose of this study was to register breathing patterns, in healthy subjects, during breathing with a positive expiratory pressure. Integrated electromyographic (IEMG) activity of the following muscles was assessed: scalene muscle, parasternal muscle and abdominal muscles, using surface electrodes. Inspiration time, expiration time, total breathing cycle time, tidal volume and breathing fr...

Background & Aim: The goal of asthma treatment and management is its control. Yoga is one of the complementary treatments which is used to control asthma. This study aimed to determine the effect of yoga breathing exercises on asthma control in 5-11 year-old children with asthma. Methods & Materials: In this quasi-experimental study, 84 children with asthma, aged 5-11 years, referred to Asthma...

In this paper we present the design and validation of a novel fully embroidered meander dipole antenna-based sensor integrated into commercially available T-shirt for real-time breathing monitoring using technique based on chest well movement analysis. The is made silver-coated nylon thread. proposed antenna-sensor cotton placed middle human chest. was designed to operate at 2.4 GHz. sensing me...

PURPOSE Patterned breathing allows standardized serial measurements of heart rate variability and baroreflex indices. The slow breathing augments these parameters, and regular exercises, including yoga breathing practices with even respiratory rates have long-term beneficial effects in cardiovascular diseases. The role of temporization of breathing phases, i.e. the ratio of expiration to inspir...

Breathing is the most basic requirement for having good health. However, unhealthy breathing like overbreathing and hyperventilation will happened easily without any awareness. We propose an experimental breathing movement exercise system Virtual Blowgun System (VBS), offering an easy way of breathing exercise, for people of different physical strength, without space and safety limitations.

This paper examines how breathing differs in the upright and supine body positions. Passive and active forces and associated chest wall motions are described for resting tidal breathing and speech breathing performed in the two positions. Clinical implications are offered regarding evaluation and treatment of breathing behavior in clients with speech and voice disorders.

This study verified the influence of chronic mouth breathing on dentofacial growth and developmental in pre-school children. The study evaluated 73 children, both sexes, ranging from 3 to 6 years of age. After the otorhinolaryngological breathing diagnosis, 44 mouth-breathing children and 29 nasal-breathing children were compared according to facial and occlusal characteristics. The skeletal pa...
