Carbon nanotube conducting arrays were constructed via consecutive amidation reactions with the aid of a linker molecule and a condensation agent on a patterned amine-terminated glass substrate. The electrical resistivity of the nanotube films was sensitive to the degree of coverage for the substrate, making it possible to tailor nanotube multilayers suitable for use in micro- or nanoscale elec...

Tandem dehydrogenation-olefin-metathesis catalyst systems, comprising a pincer-ligated iridium-based alkane dehydrogenation catalyst and a molybdenum-based olefin-metathesis catalyst, are reported to effect the metathesis-cyclooligomerization of cyclooctane and cyclodecane to give cycloalkanes with various carbon numbers, predominantly multiples of the substrate carbon number, and polymers.

Gold nanoparticle-carbon foam composites with highly-dispersed gold nanoparticles confined in the cavities were prepared. The gold nanoparticles are effectively separated from each other by permeable carbon shells, which show high temperature stability and were fully accessible to the substrate.

Respiration, which is the second most important carbon flux in ecosystems following gross primary productivity, is typically represented in biogeochemical models by simple temperature dependence equations. These equations were established in the 19th century and have been modified very little since then. Recent applications of these equations to data on soil respiration have produced highly var...

UNLABELLED Mycobacterium tuberculosis persists inside granulomas in the human lung. Analysis of the metabolic composition of granulomas from guinea pigs revealed that one of the organic acids accumulating in the course of infection is acetate (B. S. Somashekar, A. G. Amin, C. D. The focus of this work is the evaluation of the physical compatibility between an epoxy resin used as a matrix and an oxidized, unsized carbon fiber, and between this same epoxy resin and glassy carbon. For this purpose, carbon fibers, glassy carbon and epoxy resin have been assigned Hansen solubility (cohesion) parameters (HSP) by analysis of their interactions with a set of well-defined liqui...

This study takes a new look at carbon-based ion-plasma coatings (DLC) deposited on steel substrate from acetylene and methylsiloxane gas mixture. The most remarkable result to emerge X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is surface-to-substrate decrease in the "diamond" electron configuration of carbon sp3. A set tribological tests showed noticeable coefficient friction. Surprisingly, there was no i...
