The production of lipids by oleaginous yeast and fungi becomes more important because these lipids can be used for biodiesel production. To understand the process of lipid production better, we developed a model for growth, lipid production and lipid turnover in submerged batch fermentation. This model describes three subsequent phases: exponential growth when both a C-source and an N-source ar...

Murphy, W. H. (The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor) and Cora Bullis. Effect of triiodothyronine on cells and on their response to infection by polioviruses. J. Bacteriol. 83:641-648. 1962.-An analysis was made of the effect of triiodothyronine (T3) at physiological (1 mug/ml) and maximal subliminal toxic levels (35 mug/ml) on HeLa-S3, HeLa-Gey, Chang-liver, and Maben cells, and on their respo...

Cell culture technologies form the basis of most alternative methods. They have matured over the last decades, but severe limitations remain, which – to say it positively – leave room for improvement. This second article of the Food for Thought series wants to raise awareness of current limitations that impact on the predictive value of test systems based on cell cultures. The critical question...

Dynamic changes of physiological bioprocess parameters, e.g. a change in the specific growth rate μ, are frequently observed during industrial manufacturing as well as bioprocess development. A quantitative description of these variations is of great interest, since it can bring elucidation to the physiological state of the culture. The goal of this contribution was to show limitations and issu...

The present study deals with the batch and fed-batch mass production of Steinernema carpocapsae. S. carpocapsae is an entomoparasitic nematode that is used as a biological control agent of soil-borne crop insect pests. The ability and efficiency of fed-batch culture process was successful through the utilization of the nematode’s bacterial symbiont Xenorhabdus nematophila. Results from the fed-...

A blood sample from a patient who returned from Algeria with a fever inoculated on human embryonic lung fibroblasts by the shell vial cell culture technique led to the recovery of Rickettsia prowazekii. The last clinical strain was isolated 30 years ago. Shell vial cell culture is a versatile method that could replace the classic animal and/or embryonated egg inoculation.

conclusions nucleic acid amplification tests (naats) are very appropriate in detection of infected individuals. detection techniques such as naats are independent of bacterial viability, and have a potential to limit false negative samples, therefore, in our country, the application of different laboratory diagnosis methods including naats with culture as gold standard for determination antimic...

Over the years it has been an important goal to optimize the treatment of subfertility in order to obtain a better pregnancy rate and baby-take-home rate, usually combined with the goal of decreasing the rate of multiplet pregnancies. This implies optimizing the development of embryos through improved in vitro culture methods. And it also implies optimizing the methods of selection of embryos f...

Since the discovery by Enders, Weller, and Robbins in 1949' that poliovirus could multiply in cultures of non-nervous tissues, cell culture techniques have been used extensively in the studies of enteroviruses' for the last decade. The accumulated literature reveals that the usefulness of these culture methods is many-fold and may include virus isolation, virus multiplication studies, and serol...

We present a highly parallel microfluidic approach for contacting single cell pairs. The approach combines a differential fluidic resistance trapping method with a novel cellular valving principle for homotypic and heterotypic single cell co-culturing. Differential fluidic resistance was used for sequential single cell arraying, with the adhesion and flattening of viable cells within the micros...
