Cervical polyps are a common pathology in the female adult population. Giant cervical polyp is described as a polyp greater than 4cm in size and is rarely seen in clinical practice. The size and clinical presentation mimic neoplasia. So far only 14 cases of giant cervical polyps have been reported in medical literature, which are mostly single. We report a case of multiple giant cervical polyps...
Cervical spine surgery performed for the correct indications yields good results. However, surgeons need to be mindful of the many possible pitfalls. Complications may occur starting from the anaesthestic procedure and patient positioning to dura exposure and instrumentation. This review examines specific complications related to anterior and posterior cervical spine surgery, discusses their ca...
Cervical spine injuries in Rugby Union are a concerning issue at all levels of the game. The primary aim of this retrospective analysis conducted in a professional Rugby Union squad was to determine whether a 26-week isometric neck strengthening intervention program (13-week strengthening phase and 13-week maintenance phase) was effective in reducing the number and severity of cervical spine in...
Study Design Systematic review. Objectives To determine the incidence of catastrophic cervical spine injuries (CCSIs) among elite athletes participating in contact team sports and whether the incidence varies depending on the use of protective gear or by player position. Methods Electronic databases and reference lists of key articles published from January 1, 2000, to January 29, 2016, were se...
A retrospective study was conducted to examine the pattern of a disturbing increase in abnormal cervical smears in one health district. Past records over fifteen years (1965-79) were analysed to produce pick up rates according to age, screening state, severity of lesion, and area of residence. Main findings included an increased pick up rate in unscreened (5.8 to 12.9/1000 smears) and screened ...
Materials and methods: Thirty three patients without cervical spine problems were enrolled in the study. Patients were randomized into direct laryngoscopy and Airtraq® groups. Assessment of movement of the cervical spine was made by taking 3 lateral cervical spine X-rays. First, when the cervical spine was in the neutral position, second during the greatest excursion of the cervical spine, and ...
Failure to successfully intubate the trachea and secure the airway in a timely and effective manner remains a leading cause of mortality and morbidity .When airway management is difficult, various measures can be taken to facilitate tracheal intubation. Simple maneuvers like Bougie-assisted blind tracheal intubation are reasonable strategy for controlling the airway in patients who have restric...
BACKGROUND The optimal technique to intubate the trachea in patients presenting with a potential or documented cervical spine (C-spine) injury remains unresolved. Using continuous fluoroscopic video assessment, C-spine motion during laryngoscopy with an AirTraq Laryngoscope (King Medical Systems, Newark, DE) was compared to that with intubation using a Macintosh blade. METHODS Twenty-four hea...
Objectives To analyze the kinematics of cervical rotation-traction manipulation (CRTM). Methods An experimental study measuring the kinematics of CRTM was conducted. A total of 18 healthy volunteers participated in the study. A single manipulator operated the CRTM for all subjects. Motion capture technology was adopted to track the trajectory during the CRTM operation. Results The manipulat...
Pyogenic spondylodiscitis can have nonspecific clinical and imaging presentations. In this report, we describe a case of pyogenic spondylodisicits of cervical spine mimicking teardrop fracture on radiography. Subsequent CT-guided biopsy helped identify the correct diagnosis and the responsible pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus.
