Background: Anemia is a global public health problem, including Indonesia with 32% of adolescents are anemic. This study aims to process porang flour, moringa leaves, and tempe into cookies that high in iron (Fe), folic acid, cobalamin (vitamin B12), antioxidants as potential functional food snacks for anemia. Methods: experimental...

During 2001, neurologic impairment resulting from cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency was diagnosed in two children in Georgia. The children were breastfed by mothers who followed vegetarian diets. This report summarizes the two cases and provides guidance for health-care providers on identifying and preventing cobalamin deficiency among breastfed infants of vegetarian mothers.

Twelve years of mandatory food fortification with folic acid (FA), during which widespread self-supplementation pushed FA intake even higher, have nurtured questions about risks to persons with cobalamin deficiency but generated little meaningful data until just recently. In 2007 analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES) data linked higher folate concentrations with w...

A marine eukaryotic microorganism, Schizochytrium limacinum SR21, had the ability to absorb and accumulate exogenous cobalamin, which was converted to the cobalamin coenzymes 5'-deoxyadenosylcobalamin (20.1%) and methylcobalamin (29.6%). A considerably high activity (about 38 mU/mg protein) of 5'-deoxyadenosylcobalamin-dependent methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (EC 5.4.99.2) involved in amino acid and ...

Aim: Deficiency of cobalamin and folate during pregnancy is associated with megaloblastic anemia. Lower levels of folate and vitamin B12 were reported in mothers whose offspring had neural tube defects compared to unaffected controls. Increased methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels are a sensitive indicator of mild vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels denote vitamin B12 or folate d...

A case of transcobalamin II deficiency with several unique features is described. The clinical presentation was typical. except for a slightly delayed age at presentation and the occurrence of apparent neurologic dysfunction from the beginning. The unusual biochemical feature was a low serum cobalamin level (97 pg/mI). Several cobalaminbinding protein abnormalities coexisted and antedated cobal...

In the presence of oxygen aqueous solutions of the binuclear complex [cobalamin-^-NCFe(CN)5]3' undergo a redox photolysis (0 ~ 2 x 10'3 at Airr = 405 nm) which yields aquocobalamin and [Fe(CN)6]3\ It is suggested that this photoreaction is induced by direct metal-tometal charge transfer (MMCT) excitation. On the contrary, [cobalamin-fx-NC-Ru(CN)5]3' is photo-inert because a reactive MMCT state ...

A 5-year-old Amish boy diagnosed at birth as having a defect in intracellular cobalamin metabolism, cobalamin C disease (cb1C), presented to the pediatric ophthalmology service with severe visual impairment. Ophthalmoscopy showed bilateral bull's eye macular lesions. Visual loss occurs from retinal degeneration in cb1C disease. This report highlights the importance of post-natal metabolic testi...
