We introduce the concept of the “polarized” distance, which distinguishes the orthogonal states with different energies. We also give new inequalities for the known Hilbert-Schmidt distance between neighbouring states and express this distance in terms of the quasiprobability distributions and the normally ordered moments. Besides, we discuss the distance problem in the framework of the recentl...

Based on a recently developed quantum dissipation formulation [R. X. Xu and Y. J. Yan, J. Chem. Phys. 116, 9196 (2002)], we present a reduced Liouville-space approach to evaluate the response and correlation functions of dissipative systems. The weak system-bath interaction is treated properly for its effects on the initial state, the evolution, and the correlation between coherent driving and ...

Stimulated Raman scattering microscopy was used to assess the permeation of topically applied drugs and formulation excipients into porcine skin. This chemically selective technique generates high-resolution 3D images, from which semi-quantitative information may be elucidated. Ibuprofen, applied as a close-to-saturated solution in propylene glycol, was directly observed to crystallise in/on th...

In the mean-field limit the dynamics of a quantum Bose gas is described by a Hartree equation. We present a simple method for proving the convergence of the microscopic quantum dynamics to the Hartree dynamics when the number of particles becomes large and the strength of the two-body potential tends to 0 like the inverse of the particle number. Our method is applicable for a class of singular ...

using adaptive beam forming, " [J. Abstract Abstract: Harrison [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 125, 3511– 3513 (2009)] presented a mathematical explanation for a sign-inversion induced to the passive fathometer response by minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamforming. Here a concise mathematical formulation is offered, which decomposes the cross-spectral density matrix into coherent and inc...

An interesting effect found recently, that points out to potential problems and/or surprises that could be found in quantum gravity, is the presence, in the quantization of certain midisuperspaces, of what has been called “large quantum gravity effects” (LE). In the original analysis of Ashtekar [1], the model chosen is rotationally symmetric 2+1 gravity coupled to a massless scalar field (a sp...

Long-Reach Passive Optical Network (LR-PON) using hybrid TDM/WDM techniques is one of the candidates for the future optical access that can solve the expected increase in terms of traffic demand and area coverage. One of its advantages is the possibility to share the capacity of any wavelength among more than one user, through TDM/WDM hybrid multiplexing. However, it is still an open issue whic...

The matched filter enables imaging with high spatial resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio by coherent correlation with the expected field from what is assumed to be a discrete scatterer. In many physical imaging systems, however, returns from a large number of randomized scatterers, ranging from thousands to millions of individuals, are received together and the coherent or expected field ...

The program to construct minimum-uncertainty coherent states for general potentials works transparently with solvable analytic potentials. However, when an analytic potential is not completely solvable, like for a doublewell or the linear (gravitational) potential, there can be a conundrum. Motivated by supersymmetry concepts in higher dimensions, we show how these conundrums can be overcome.
