The effect of the single, site-specific interstrand cross-link formed by cisplatin or transplatin on the thermal stability and energetics of a 20-base pair DNA duplex is reported. The cross-linked or unplatinated 20-base pair duplexes were investigated with the aid of differential scanning calorimetry, temperature-dependent UV absorption, and circular dichroism. The cross-link of both platinum ...

Spectral estimation of tissue strain has been performed previously by using the centroid shift of the power spectrum or by estimating the variation in the mean scatterer spacing in the spectral domain. The centroid shift method illustrates the robustness of the direct, incoherent strain estimator. In this paper, we present a strain estimator that uses spectral cross-correlation of the preand po...

Viscoelastic relaxation processes factor into polymer performance and stability throughout an application lifetime, controlled by the polymer network structure and dynamics which occur over a wide spectrum of time scales. In this work, we detail the design and operation of an independent array of surface indenters which can measure the creep response at multiple points on a polymer substrate. S...

An ultra scale-down method is described to determine the response of cells to recovery by dead-end (batch) centrifugation under commercially defined manufacturing conditions. The key variables studied are the cell suspension hold time prior to centrifugation, the relative centrifugal force (RCF), time of centrifugation, cell pellet resuspension velocities, and number of resuspension passes. The...

Bomb calorimetry measurements were made on dried whole body samples of N. guentheri in an attempt to detect the effect of age induced protein crosslinking. The results show a clear decrease in body energy with increasing age. However, this decrease was larger than expected and was probably due to a slight decrease in body fat component with increasing age rather than crosslinking alone.

The two domains of the hairpin ribozyme-substrate complex, usually depicted as straight structural elements, must interact with one another in order to form an active conformation. Little is known about the internal geometry of the individual domains in an active docked complex. Using various crosslinking and structural approaches in conjunction with molecular modeling (constraint-satisfaction ...

Chikungunya virus recently caused large outbreaks world-wide. In this issue of Cell, Fox et al. describe several potently neutralizing antibodies against multiple alphaviruses. The structure of the virus in complex with one of the antibodies reveals the antibody-induced rearrangement and crosslinking of the viral surface proteins that result in neutralization.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of UVA-activated riboflavin (UVA-RF) on the mechanical properties of non-demineralized human dentin. Dentin specimens obtained from 20 teeth were randomly divided into the following four groups: group 1 (control): no treatment, group 2 (low UVA-RF): specimens were exposed to UVA-RF for 10 min, group 3 (medium UVA-RF): specimens were exposed to U...

Recent experiments show that networks of stiff biopolymers cross-linked by transient linker proteins exhibit complex stress relaxation, enabling network flow at long times. We present a model for the dynamics controlled by cross-links in such networks. We show that a single microscopic time scale for cross-linker unbinding leads to a broad spectrum of macroscopic relaxation times and a shear mo...

Introduction In the past decade several investigations have been reported on various hydrogels,1-3 particularly neutral polymer gels [e.g., poly(acrylamide) or poly(vinyl alcohol)] and weakly charged polyelectrolytes [e.g., poly(acrylic acid) or poly(styrenesulfonate)]. Less attention has been paid to neutralized polyelectrolytes in the presence of added salt. It is generally understood that fu...
