I discuss soft-gluon corrections in hard-scattering processes and their re-summation. I present master formulas for the expansion of the resummed cross section through NNNLO and discuss the significance of these corrections in a number of processes.
We combine six measurements of the top-antitop (tt̄) production cross section (σtt̄) based on data collected by the CDF and D0 detectors at the Fermilab Tevatron. The datasets correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 8.8 fb. We obtain a value of σtt̄ = 7.65 ± 0.42 pb for a top-quark mass mt = 172.5 GeV/c. The contributions to the uncertainty correspond to 0.20 pb from statistical sources, 0....
We report on QCD radiative corrections to heavy quark production valid at high energy. The formulae presented will allow a matched calculation of the total cross section which is correct at O(α s) and includes resummation of all terms of order α s[αs ln(s/m )]. We measure the ratio of the isolated direct photon prodution cross section at √ s = 630 GeV to that at √ s = 1800 GeV for the central (|η| < 0.9) and forward (1.6 < |η| < 2.5) rapidity regions. We compare the result with next to leading order QCD predictions using CTEQ parton distribution functions.
Based upon the notion fiat the large cross section observed in -!-ee hadrons may be due to a kind of hadronic core inside the electron, it is suggested that there may also be a large cross section for e-ehadrons and further that lepton number may not be conserved in the latter reaction. With help of direct calculation, it is revealed that an essential concept in deriving the Boltzmann collisional operator, the scattering cross section in the laboratory frame, cannot be well defined. Along this line, it is suggested that the collisional operator, as well as the entire Boltzmann equation, should be reconsidered.
