The chronic shortage of deceased kidney donors has led to increased utilization of donation after cardiac death (DCD) kidneys, the majority of which are procured in a controlled setting. The objective of this study is to evaluate transplantation outcomes from uncontrolled DCD (uDCD) donors and evaluate their utility as a source of donor kidneys. From January 1995 to December 2004, 75,865 kidney...

Over the past several years we have noted a marked decrease in this profitability of our kidney transplant program. Our hypothesis is that this reduction in kidney transplant institutional profitability is related to aggressive donor and recipient practices. The study population included all adults with Medicare insurance who received a kidney transplant at our center between 1999 and 2005. Ado...

Delayed graft function (DGF) is a common complication of deceased donor kidney transplantation with negative impact on clinical outcomes. In a single-center retrospective analysis, we compared patient and kidney survival, early renal function, and the incidence of acute rejection during the first year among all adult deceased donor kidney transplant patients without DGF, with DGF requiring one-...

The association between prolonged donor warm ischemia time and poor early graft function has been challenged, but with little evidence. We intend to remove ambiguities and present evidence from the current literature. All donor surgeons must strive to limit warm ischemia to reduce poor early graft function and improve long-term outcomes.

Delayed graft function (DGF) is the need for dialysis in the first week after transplantation. Studied were risk factors for DGF in adult (age >/=16 yr) cadaveric renal transplant recipients by means of a multivariable modeling procedure. Only donor and recipient factors known before transplantation were chosen so that the probabilities of DGF could be calculated before transplantation and appr...

The disparity between kidney transplant candidates and donors necessitates innovations to increase organ availability. Transporting kidneys allows for living donors and recipients to undergo surgery with a familiar transplant team, city, friends, and family. The effect of shipping kidneys and prolonged cold ischemia time (CIT) with living donor transplantation outcomes is not clearly known. Thi...

We have shown that alloreactive CD8 T cell activation may proceed via CD4-dependent and CD4-independent pathways, and that CD8 T cell activation in Ag-primed animals is independent of CD154 costimulation. In this report, we further analyzed the activation and function of alloreactive CD8 CTL effectors in CD4 knockout (KO) skin/cardiac allograft recipients. FACS analysis showed that alloreactive...

BACKGROUND The early prediction of delayed graft function (DGF) would facilitate patient management after kidney transplantation. METHODS In a single-centre retrospective analysis, we investigated kinetic estimated GFR under non-steady-state conditions, KeGFR, in prediction of DGF. KeGFR(sCr) was calculated at 4h, 8h and 12h in 56 recipients of deceased donor kidneys from initial serum creati...

PBS140 offers good cold preservation in renal transplantation and now, crucially, has been shown to promote immediate function following warm ischemia. For a new cold preservation solution to compete with UW solution, improved efficacy and lower price may not be enough. Reducing rates of delayed graft function in organs from non-heart-beating and marginal donors might be the key.

Records of 9,055 lambs from a composite population originating from crossing Columbia rams to Hampshire x Suffolk ewes at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center were used to estimate genetic parameters among growth traits. Traits analyzed were weights at birth (BWT), weaning (7 wk, WWT), 19 mo (W19), and 31 mo (W31) and postweaning ADG from 9 to 18 or 19 wk of age. The ADG was also divided into d...
