The competition between basicity and nucleophilicity of two standard organolithium reagents was studied using DFT. Comparing the reactivity of solvated (MeLi)2 and (LDA)2 toward propanal finally explains why methyllithium adds onto the carbonyl while LDA deprotonates the α-position, in accord with experiment and Ireland's deprotonation TS.

A novel chiral magnesium bisamide has enabled the development of effective asymmetric deprotonation protocols at substantially more elevated temperatures. This new, structurally simple, C(2)-symmetric magnesium complex displays excellent levels of asymmetric efficiency and energy reduction in the synthesis of enantioenriched enol silanes.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) were generated in-situ from imidazolium and imidazolinium salts by deprotonation of C-2 hydrogen and were used as ligands in the copper-catalyzed addition of diethylzinc to N-sulfonylimines. The copper-NHC complexes were shown to possess an efficient ligand acceleration effect (LAE).

The functionalization of perylene bisimide by squaric acid afforded halochromic dyes with pronounced acidity. The dye senses solvent polarity, pH and humidity by means of pronounced changes in absorption spectra and thin film color through the intramolecular charge transfer between perylene and cyclobutene cores initiated by protonation/deprotonation.

CO2-switchable multi-compartment micelles (MCMs) with a segregated corona formed by a purpose-designed ABC triblock copolymer are reported. They can be switched "on" and "off" when sequentially treated with CO2 and N2, due to the protonation-deprotonation of the tertiary amine groups along the polymer skeleton.
