Electron transfer events involving single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) play an integral role in a variety of applications, ranging from nanotube covalent functionalization to SWCNT-based photovoltaics. In the first part of this thesis, we explore ground-state electron transfer events, during the diazonium derivatization of carbon nanotubes, with the objective of modulating the extent of cov...
Here, we present a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanosensor for environmental pollutants detection. This study was conducted on three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), fluoranthene (FL), and naphthalene (NAP). SERS substrates were chemically functionalized using 4-dodecyl benzenediazonium-tetrafluoroborate and SERS analyses were conducted to detect the ...
A convenient and general zinc-catalyzed borylation of aryl diazonium salts and aryltriazenes has been developed. With bis- (pinacolato)diboron as the borylation reagent, aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborate salts and aryltriazenes were transformed into the corresponding arylboronates in moderate to excellent yields under mild conditions. As a convenient and practical methodology, no additional ligan...
The covalent functionalization of the external wall of C(60)@SWCNT peapods, by in situ generated aryl diazonium salts, assisted by microwave irradiation is reported. Spectroscopic, thermal and microscopy characterization was performed. Electrochemistry revealed the three reversible reductions of encapsulated C(60), however, shifted towards positive potentials when compared with those of intact ...
A transition-metal-free carboxyamidation process, using aryl diazonium tetrafluoroborates and isocyanides under mild conditions, has been developed. This novel conversion was initiated by a base and solvent induced aryl radical, followed by radical addition to isocyanide and single electron transfer (SET) oxidation, affording the corresponding arylcarboxyamide upon hydration of the nitrilium in...
We developed a visible detection system for antibody-catalyzed retro-aldol-retro-Michael reactions. Aldolase antibody 38C2 catalyzed the reaction of substrate 1 to provide 6-bromo-2-napthol that forms a visible colored azo dye with diazonium salts. This system has potential for the screening of novel catalysts.
An environmentally friendly Matsuda-Heck reaction with arenediazonium tosylates has been developed for the first time. A range of alkenes was arylated in good to quantitative yields in water. The reaction is significantly accelerated when carried out under microwave heating. The arylation of haloalkylacrylates with diazonium salts has been implemented for the first time.
Experimental and computational studies on the formation of aryl azides from the corresponding diazonium salts support a stepwise mechanism via acyclic zwitterionic intermediates. The low energy barriers associated with both transition structures are compatible with very fast and efficient processes, thus making this method suitable for the chemical synthesis of radiolabelled aryl azides.
Reproducible materials that have detection properties towards a certain molecule are very important for applications in the fabrication of devices. Among all substrates used, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite allows to clearly image monolayer. On other hand, cryptand molecules versatile because they can sense analytes with high selectivity. The electrode was first functionalized an aryl bearin...
Abstract Electrochemical grafting is a suitable technology for fabricating electrode surfaces with new chemical functionalities whilst maintaining the bulk properties of electrode, and electrochemical amine oxidation diazonium salt reduction are two widely used techniques to achieve this end. Herein, we report reductive Azure A onto multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) electrodes efficient wirin...
