Although widely used in workplace, indoor and ambient air quality assessments, diffusive sampling has not yet been established as a common tool for dispersion model validation. In this study, three mathematical models (STREET, OSPM and AEOLIUS) that are likely to be used for regulatory purposes were validated against experimental data obtained in two street canyons in Paris. Diffusive tubes wer...
In this paper, we develop an Asymptotic-Preserving (AP) stochastic Galerkin scheme for the radiative heat transfer equations with random inputs and diffusive scalings. In this problem the random inputs arise due to uncertainties in cross section, initial data or boundary data. We use the generalized polynomial chaos based stochastic Galerkin (gPC-SG) method, which is combined with the micro-mac...
We investigate whether bonds can hedge volatility risk in the U.S. Treasury market, as predicted by most ‘affine’ term structure models. To this end, we construct powerful and model-free empirical measures of the quadratic yield variation for a cross-section of fixed-maturity zero-coupon bonds (‘realized yield volatility’) through the use of high-frequency data. We find that the yield curve fai...
At the synapse, vesicles stably dock at the active zone. However, in cellular membranes, proteins undergo a diffusive motion. It is not known how the motion of membrane proteins involved in vesicle exocytosis is compatible with both vesicle docking and the dynamic remodeling of the plasma membrane imposed by cycles of exocytosis and endocytosis. To address this question, we studied the motion o...
We describe a porometer that enables continuous monitoring of the stomatal diffusive resistance of leaves. The flux is measured of a gas-such as nitrous oxide-diffusing through a leaf that divides an enclosing chamber into two compartments. Nitrous oxide is added in known concentration to the airstream passing through the compartment on one side of the leaf and is recovered from the airstream p...
We investigate the force-induced diffusive motion of a tracer particle inside a glass-forming suspension when a strong external force is applied to the probe (active nonlinear microrheology). A schematic model of mode-coupling theory introduced recently is extended to describe the transient dynamics of the probe particle, and used to analyze recent molecular-dynamics simulation data. The model ...
The modeling of populations is of great importance in ecology and economy, for instance, to describe predator-prey and competition interactions, to predict the dynamics of cell divisions and infectious diseases, and to manage renewable resources (harvesting). Population models describe the change of the number of species due to birth, death, and movement from position to position (in space) or ...
We employ the Keldysh formalism in the quasiclassical approximation to study transport in a diffusive superconductor. The resulting 434 transport equations describe the flow of charge and energy as well as the corresponding flow of spin and spin energy. Spin-flip scattering due to magnetic impurities is included. We find that the spin-flip length is renormalized in the superconducting case and ...
We prove two stability results for the scale invariant solutions of the nonlinear heat equation ∂ t u = ∆u−|u| p−1 u with 1 < p < 1+ 2 n , n being the spatial dimension. The first result is that a small perturbation of a scale invariant solution vanishes as t → ∞. The second result is global, with a positivity condition on the initial data.
We describe two methods, liquid deposition photolithography and holographic lithography, for fabricating two-dimensional arrays of optical waveguides with high channel counts. Both methods rely on refractive index patterning via monomer diffusion in photosensitive polymers. © 2012 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (130.5460) Polymer waveguides
