Block-detection and three-dimensional moment algorithms are applied to determine the presence and orientation of cylinders in a three-dimensional image. The proposed method detects blood vessels in a three-dimensional tomographic image constructed by infrared radiometry. Based on the moment principle, the method can be employed to determine the centroid, diameter, and orientation of arbitrarily...

This paper presents an algorithm for the unconstrained two-dimensional cutting problem of rectangular pieces. It proposes the two-stage general block pattern that can be cut into general blocks in two stages, with another two or more stages being required to cut the blocks into pieces. Firstly vertical cuts divide the stock sheet into segments, and then horizontal cuts divide the segments into ...

Three-dimensional periodic complex structures are encountered in various soft matter systems such as liquid crystals, block-copolymer phases and the related nano-structured materials. Here, we review several well-defined topologies: two-dimensional hexagonal phase, three-dimensional packing of spheres, tetrahedral close packing (tcp) bi-continuous and tri-continuous cubic phases. We illustrate ...

This thesis develops some aspects of the theory of block fusion systems. Chapter 1 contains a brief introduction to the group algebra and some simple results about algebras over a field of positive characteristic. In chapter 2 we define the concept of a fusion system and the fundamental property of saturation. We also define block fusion systems and prove that they are saturated. Chapter 3 deve...

We propose a model which represents a four-dimensional version of Ponzano and Regge’s three-dimensional euclidean quantum gravity. In particular we show that the exponential of the euclidean Einstein-Regge action for a 4d-discretized block is given, in the semiclassical limit, by a gaussian integral of a suitable 12j-symbol. Possible developments of this result are discussed.

A block spin renormalization group approach is proposed for the dynamical triangulation formulation of quantum gravity in arbitrary dimensions. Renormalization group flow diagrams are presented for the three-dimensional and four-dimensional theories near their respective transitions. PACS numbers: 04.60.+n, 05.70.Jk, 11.10.Gh

Solving the Fokker-Planck equation for high-dimensional complex dynamical systems is an important issue. Recently, the authors developed efficient statistically accurate algorithms for solving the Fokker-Planck equations associated with high-dimensional nonlinear turbulent dynamical systems with conditional Gaussian structures, which contain many strong non-Gaussian features such as intermitten...

We are analyzing storage structures for two and three dimensional raster type data which are used for feature retrieval The features are one two or three dimensional objects with regular outlines like a rectangle or a prism The features could be parts of a map or image an area of special interest for searching after oil a sequence of ultra sound images and so on The storage medium is magnetic d...

As the development of the PSOR method (a point parallel SOR method by mesh domain partitioning proposed in [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 20 (1999), pp. 2261–2281], this paper introduces a new mesh domain partition and ordering (the multitype partition and ordering), and proposes a new block parallel SOR (BPSOR) method for numerically solving 2-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) elliptic bounda...

Synthetic (co)polymers or (co)oligomers with two (or more) repeating groups show not only molar mass distribution, but also composition and sequence distribution of the individual repeat units. To characterize such two- (or more-) dimensional distribution, liquid chromatography under "critical conditions" has been suggested, where the separation according to one type of repeating units is suppr...
