In the phaseolotoxin biosynthetic gene cluster of Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola 1448A, the PSPPH_4299 gene encodes a novel L-amino acid ligase. The PSPPH_4299 protein synthesized various hetero-dipeptides containing basic amino acids in an ATP-dependent manner, and also synthesized alanyl-homoarginine, part of the phaseolotoxin scaffold.

Environmentally friendly one-pot synthesis of amides, bis-amides and dipeptides by mechanochemical carbodiimide-mediated coupling of carboxylic acids and amines is described; high reaction yields and simple aqueous work-up allow for the clean, practical and fast preparation of a variety of compounds containing the amide bond from readily accessible reagents.

Model prebiotic dipeptide sequences were identified by bioinformatics and DFT and molecular dynamics calculations. The peptides were then synthesized and evaluated for metal affinity and specificity. Cysteine containing dipeptides were not associated with metal affinities that followed the Irving-Williams series but did follow the concentration trends found in seawater.

A series of novel proline-based reduced dipeptides was developed and evaluated for a direct Michael addition of ketones and aldehydes to nitroalkenes. Excellent yields (up to 95%), diastereoselectivities (up to 98% dr) and enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee) were achieved in the presence of 5 mol% catalyst without any additional additives at room temperature.

Among l- and d-oligopeptides with multiple pyrenes as pendants, the dipeptides with two and three pyrenes showed blue-coloured circularly polarised luminescence as high as |gem|≈ (0.86-1.1) × 10(-2) at around 450 nm, reflecting from exciton couplets of twisted pyrenes.
