In this paper we consider some of the basic design principles that should support the development of future DRM systems. We begin by discussing some of the problems associated with current DRM environments, and how they might be alleviated through the adoption of an open architectural framework based on basic design principles. We then demonstrate a particular implementation referred to as the ...

This paper summarizes and discusses findings on compatibility of the forthcoming DRM mode E into classical VHF FM sound broadcasting. The results are based on theoretical considerations, lab measurements, field trials and radio network planning exercises. In addition, the status of the ongoing work towards a comprehensive DRM mode E coverage study including first results hereof are given.

In the first part of this presentation, recent advances in reliability-based robust design optimization (RBRDO) will be presented. The objective of RBRDO is to minimize the product quality loss function subject to probabilistic constraints. Since the quality loss function is usually expressed in terms of the first two statistical moments, mean and variance, many methods have been proposed to ac...

We demonstrate constraints on usage of direct revelation mechanisms (DRMs) by corporations inhabiting economies with securities markets. We consider a corporation seeking to acquire decision relevant information. In an environment with a securities market, the act of posting a standard DRM endogenously increases the informed agent’s outside option value. If the informed agent rejects said DRM, ...

RNA interference is a conserved process in which double-stranded RNA is processed into 21-25 nucleotide siRNAs that trigger posttranscriptional gene silencing. In addition, plants display a phenomenon termed RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) in which DNA with sequence identity to silenced RNA is de novo methylated at its cytosine residues. This methylation is not only at canonical CpG sites b...

The elucidation of pathways linking patterning to morphogenesis is a problem of great interest. We show here that, in addition to their roles in patterning and morphogenesis of the hindgut, the Drosophila genes drumstick (drm) and bowl are required in the foregut for spatially localized gene expression and the morphogenetic processes that form the proventriculus. drm and bowl belong to a family...

During animal development, gene transcription is tuned to tissue-appropriate levels. Here we uncover antagonistic regulation of transcript levels in the germline of Caenorhabditis elegans hermaphrodites. The histone methyltransferase MES-4 (Maternal Effect Sterile-4) marks genes expressed in the germline with methylated lysine on histone H3 (H3K36me) and promotes their transcription; MES-4 also...

BACKGROUND As part of efforts to implement the human resources capacity building component of the African Regional Strategy on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) for the health sector, the African Regional Office of the World Health Organization, in collaboration with selected African public health training institutions, followed a multistage process to develop core competencies and curricula for t...
