Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), consisting of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), results in substantial morbidity and is difficult to treat. New strategies for adjunct therapies are needed. One candidate is the semi-essential amino acid, L-arginine (L-Arg), a complementary medicine purported to be an enhancer of immunity and vitality in the lay media. Using dextran sulfate sodium (D...

This paper considers distributed storage systems (DSSs) from a graph theoretic perspective. A DSS is constructed by means of the path decomposition of a 3regular graph into P4 paths. The paths represent the disks of the DSS and the edges of the graph act as the blocks of storage. We deduce the properties of the DSS from a related graph and show their optimality.

The effects of modulating tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) levels with a metabolic precursor, sepiapterin (SP), on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis and azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colorectal cancer were studied. SP in the drinking water blocks DSS-induced colitis measured as decreased disease activity index (DAI), morphologic criteria, and recovery of Ca(2+)-induced contractility responses ...

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is multifactorial and involves immunological, environmental and genetic factors. Although there are no animal models that effectively mimic human IBD, experimental models allow us to analyze the mechanisms of chronic intestinal inflammation. IBD can be induced in mice by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) or by a 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)‑ethanol enem...

Widespread replication of information can ameliorate the problem of server overloading but raises the allied question of server selection. Clients may be assigned to a replica in a static manner or they may choose among replicas based on client-initiated measurements. The latter technique, called dynamic server selection (DSS), can provide signi®cantly improved response time to users when compa...

Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced murine colitis represents an experimental model for human inflammatory bowel disease. The aim of this study was to screen various inbred strains of mice for genetically determined differences in susceptibility to DSS-induced colitis. Mice of strains C3H/HeJ, C3H/HeJBir, C57BL/6J, DBA/2J, NOD/LtJ, NOD/LtSz- Prkdcscid/Prkdcscid , 129/SvPas, NON/LtJ, and NON.NO...

The Apc(MIN/+) mouse is a well-characterised model of intestinal tumourigenesis in which animals develop macroscopically detectable adenomas. However, most of the adenomas are formed in the small intestine and resolution of events in the colon, the most relevant site for human disease, is limited. Inducing colitis with dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) can selectively enhance the development of les...

This study investigates the changing intellectual structure of the decision support system (DSS) field by means of an empirical assessment of the DSS literature over two successive time periods, 1971-1990 and 1991-1995. A multivariate data analysis tool, cluster analysis, is applied to an author cocitation frequency matrix derived from a large database file of comprehensive DSS literature over ...

Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) exhibit an increased risk for the development of cancer of the colon and rectum. This association is widely attributed to colonic inflammation. However, the severity of colonic inflammation necessary for the development of dysplasia and/or cancer remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the pattern of cell proliferation in colorectal carcinogenesis i...

BACKGROUND/AIMS The unique role of enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) in the production of leukotrienes makes it a therapeutic target for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of B-98, a newly synthesized benzoxazole derivatives and a novel 5-LO inhibitor, in a mouse model of IBD induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). METHODS C57BL/6 mice were randoml...
