In this work we report injury to isolated red blood cells (RBCs) due to focused shock waves in a cavitation-free environment. The lithotripter-generated shock wave was refocused by a parabolic reflector. This refocused wave field had a tighter focus (smaller beam width and a higher amplitude) than the lithotripter wave field, as characterized by a membrane hydrophone. Cavitation was eliminated ...

We present a new approach to determine the 3-D topography and lateral continuity of seismic interfaces using 2-D-derived controlled-source seismic reflector data. The aim of the approach is to give the simplest possible structure consistent with all reflector data and error estimates. We define simplicity of seismic interfaces by the degree of interface continuity (i.e. shortest length of offse...

The recently developed Spring Back Reflector has low stiffness in the deployed configuration. A general method of stiffening this type of reflector without changing its folding properties is presented. The stiffening is achieved by adding a conical skirt around the edge of the dish; this skirt snaps elastically when the dish is folded. The paper concludes that it is possible to design spring ba...

According to the deformation and movement requirements of the FAST reflector, a multipurpose analysis, including the load-bearing behavior, deformation, construction costs of the reflector supporting structure and its model, is presented in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of steel and aluminum alloy structures are also discussed and compared through detailed design calculations und...

We have successfully prepared anodized alumina membrane distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) using electrochemical anodization method. The transmission peak of this distributed Bragg reflector could be easily and effectively modulated to cover almost any wavelength range of the whole visible spectrum by adjusting anodization temperature.

We have proposed and fabricated a new mid-infrared reflector using the guided-mode resonance (GMR). The GMR reflector consists of subwavelength Ge grating on GaAs substrate with a low-refractive-index SiOx layer in between. With a total thickness of about 2 μm, a near-100% reflectivity at 8 μm has been obtained both theoretically and experimentally.

A millimeter wave antenna measurement system is presented. The frequencies of operation are around 100 GHz and 300 GHz (W/J Bands). The facility is a single reflector compact range system. Design tasks deal with the serrated reflector and the corresponding millimeter wave instrumentation design.

A wavelength-switchable L-band erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) assisted by an artificially controlled backscattering (ACB) reflector is here presented. This random was inscribed femtosecond (fs) direct writing on the axial axis of a multimode with 50 μm core and 125 cladding length 17 mm. microstructure placed inside surgical syringe to be positioned in center high-precision rotation mount accu...

The radiation of a circular cylindrical reflector antenna in the presence of imperfect flat earth is treated in an accurate manner. The boundary value problem is formulated in terms of a full-wave integral equation converted to the dual-series equations and then regularized by using analytical inversion of the static part. The resulting Fredholm second-kind matrix equation is solved numerically...

Planck is the third generation of mm-wave instruments designed for space observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies within the new Cosmic Vision 2020 ESA Science Program. Planck will map the whole sky with unprecedented sensitivity, angular resolution, and frequency coverage , and it likely leads us to the final comprehension of the CMB anisotropies. The Low Frequency In...
