Bacteriocin-producing (Bac⁺) lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from a variety of food products and animal sources. Samples were enriched in de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) Lactocilli broth and plated onto MRS agar plates using a "sandwich overlay" technique. Inhibitory activity was detected by the "deferred antagonism" indicator overlay method using Listeria monocytogenes as the primary...

Background: Various herbal products are being tried to treat common ailments. Such a trend is witnessed in dentistry also. gall extract of Quercus infectoria has been found to possess antibacterial properties against some common oral pathogens. Aim: to assess the antibacterial property and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIc) of gall extract of Quercus infectoria against Enterococcus faecalis...

A virulent bacteriophage (Ec-ZZ2) that infects Enterococcus faecium was isolated from sewage. The bacteriophage belongs to the family Siphoviridae and has a linear double-stranded DNA genome, with a length of 41,170 bp and a 34.59% G+C content, which is highly similar to Enterococcus phage IME-EF4.

A nucleotide transversion from guanine to uracil in the 23S rRNA confers linezolid resistance. We describe a real-time PCR using two Taqman probes that detects a single mutated allele among the genomes of Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis. Results were confirmed by a classical approach involving LabChip technology assayed with an Agilent Bioanalyzer 2100.

Enterococcus hirae is a rare isolate in clinical specimens. We describe a case of native aortic-valve endocarditis that was caused by Enterococcus hirae in a 72-year-old man. This is the first reported case of endocarditis due to this organism.
