The specific detection of the antigens of vaccine virus in cultured human cells by means of fluorescent antibody is reported. The antigenic material occurred in the cytoplasm in progressively increasing amounts and in the early stages was in close contact with the nuclear membrane. The antigens were present in a finely particulate form, either as foci or loosely spread out, up to late stages of...

abstract   background: nasopharyngeal carcinoma (npc) is a nonlymphomatous squamous cell carcinoma (scc) that occurs in the epithelial lining of the nasopharynx. viral, geographic, and ethnic factors are responsible for its multifactorial futures. previous studies have showed the role of epstein-barr virus (ebv) in the pathogenesis of npc but no study has been conducted on the iranian populatio...

The non-histone nuclear phosphoprotein B2 (Mr 68,000; pI 6.5-8.2) was found to bind specifically defined fragments of DNA. With the use of monoclonal IgG2A antibodies prepared against this nuclear antigen, nucleosomal DNA fragments associated with phosphoprotein B2 were isolated and cloned. Nine cloned fragments were sequenced and analysed for similarity. The clone having the most similarity to...

Freezing of the chorioallantoic membrane after brief fixation in formalin preserves antigenicity of cellular components and allows penetration of ferritin-conjugated antibody. Dense aggregates of viral antigen, presumed to be of the soluble type, were found in the nuclei of cells infected with influenza virus. Intracytoplasmic antigen, on the other hand, was widely dispersed. The experimental o...

Viral hepatitis resulting in chronic liver disease is an important clinical challenge and insight into the cellular processes that drive pathogenesis will be critical in order to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic options. Nuclear inclusions in viral and non-viral hepatitis are well documented and have diagnostic significance in some disease contexts. However, the origins and functional con...

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) oriP and the EBV nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1) protein allow persistence of EBV-based episomes. A nuclear matrix attachment region (MAR) spans oriP and the adjacent region of the EBV genome containing the EBV-expressed RNAs. Here, we show that episomes with the MAR are retained significantly more efficiently in EBV-positive B cells than episomes containing oriP alone.

Lymphocytes were infected with the QIMR-WIL strain of Epstein-Barr virus, and the induction of Epstein-Barr virus-associated nuclear antigens was determined by using the protein immunoblot. There was a temporal increase in six antigens, with Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen 2 being detected 1 day after infection. The appearance of these antigens was shown to be independent of cellular DNA synthesis.

We recently reported proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) as a ligand for the NK cell activating receptor, NKp44, which unexpectedly triggers inhibition. The recognition of nuclear proteins such as PCNA, by related NK cell receptors has been reported. Widespread upregulation of PCNA in tumor cells may therefore promote immune evasion.
