Large shield volcanoes and calderas are not observed on the Moon. Theoretical assessments show that melt ascending from the mantle will stall at rheological traps or at the shallower density trap at the base of the low-density lunar crust. Magma will then only reach the surface along dikes propagated from these deep reservoirs, and such events will be infrequent and characterized by very large-...

Updating network flows in a real-world setting is a nascent research area, especially with the recent rise of Software Defined Networks. While augmenting s-t flows of a single commodity is a well-understood concept, we study updating flows in a multi-commodity setting: Given a directed network with flows of different commodities, how can the capacity of some commodities be increased, without re...

Fluid turbulence, and the process of its onset from a laminar state, are complex multiscale phenomena that are as technologically important as they are challenging to understand. Turbulence leads to undesirable drag in many flows, but also increases beneficial mixing. Turbulence in viscoelastic flow, obtained by adding polymers to a solvent, exhibits unique features with potentially dramatic te...

In the field of smart cities, researchers need an indication of how people move in and between cities. Yet, getting statistics of travel flows within public transit systems has proven to be troublesome. In order to get an indication of public transit travel flows in Belgium, we analyzed the query logs of the iRail API, a highly expressive route planning API for the Belgian railways. We were abl...

introduction hydrograph of springs represents clearly all physical processes that control ground water flows inside aquifer (kuto et al., 2012: 41). study of the curve can reveal information about structure and function of aquifer, particularly hydrodynamic parameters including permeability and storage (troch et al., 1993: 228). analysis of recession curve has the advantage to calculate paramet...

This paper deals with bracket flows of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. We establish elementary convergence results for such flows and discuss some of their consequences.

We know an enormous amount about the chemistry of a living cell, but next to nothing about its physics — the interplay of forces between organelles and molecules that governs the cell’s detailed behaviour. Think of the plasma membrane, for example: an oily sea of phospholipid molecules studded with protein ‘icebergs’ of different shapes and sizes, some floating free and others anchored at their...

We develop a dynamical renormalization method for the problem of local reducibility of analytic linear quasi-periodic skew-product flows on T2×SL(2,R). This approach is based on the continued fraction expansion of the linear base flow and deals with ’small-divisors’ by turning them into ’large-divisors’. We use this method to give a new proof of a normal form theorem for a Brjuno base flow.

Understanding the complexities of cranial base development, function, and architecture is important for testing hypotheses about many aspects of craniofacial variation and evolution. We summarize key aspects of cranial base growth and development in primates that are useful for formulating and testing hypotheses about the roles of the chondrocranium and basicranium in cranial growth, integratio...
