BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We compared the current antithrombotic strategy of antiplatelet therapy with aspirin, and anticoagulant therapy with heparin, with a specific genetically engineered chimeric antibody (c7E3 Fab) directed against the human glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor in an animal model of arterial thrombosis. METHODS Anesthetized cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were instrument...

In this issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, de Waard et al1 report enhanced neointima formation and luminal stenosis following carotid artery ligation in mice deficient for plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) or vitronectin (VN) compared with their wildtype counterparts. Their findings appear to contradict those of a recently published study by Peng et al,2 thus ad...

A case is presented in-which the detection of venous-stasis retinopathy in one eye led to investigation of the carotid circulation. There were no neurologic symptoms of carotid insufficiency, and noninvasive tests failed to reveal significant carotid pathology. Digital subtraction angiography and carotid angiography demonstrated a carotid plaque of doubtful significance. At carotid endarterecto...

artery in the neck. Obviously the pressure is not always so low and will depend on the collateral circulation which may be much better to the eye than to the brain. On the contrary, one might expect to find a near-zero low diastolic retinal artery pressure in some patients with a stroke without carotid artery occlusion but with a retinal artery stenosis or thrombosis (near-zero low pressure is ...
