This paper argues that certain choice problems in transportation research can be best conceptualized as problems of portfolio choice. It discusses how portfolio choice problems can be studied using stated choice (conjoint) methods. Issues in the construction in the design of experiments, model specification and estimation are discussed. A working example illustrates the basic approach. Finally,...

People are using the Internet for financial planning assistance. Yet those seeking advice on the Internet rarely tend to question the advice source. Much work is focused upon music genre recognition (MGR) from audio recordings, symbolic data, and other modalities. While reviews have been written of some of this work before, no survey has been made of the approaches to evaluating approaches to MGR. This paper compiles a bibliography of work in MGR, and analyzes three aspects of evaluation: experimental designs, datasets, and figures of merit.

A sound experimental design should follow the established scientific protocols and generate good statistical data [3]. As an example, experiments on an industrial scale can cost millions of dollars. Repeating the experiment beca...

Mathematical modelers from different disciplines and regulatory agencies worldwide agree on the importance of a careful sensitivity analysis (SA) of model-based inference. The most popular SA practice seen in the literature is that of ’one-factor-at-a-time’ (OAT). This consists of analyzing the effect of varying one model input factor at a time while keeping all other fixed. While the shortcomi...
