Background: Lumbar spondylolysis is a common fatigue fracture of the pars interarticularis lamina lumbar spine in adolescent athletes presenting with clefts. Some pseudarthrotic causes low back pain or radiculopathy. This study presents case that was successfully treated using modified smiley face rod technique.

background at altnagelvin, a district general hospital in northern ireland, we have observed that a significant number of hip fracture admissions are later readmitted for treatment of other medical conditions. these readmissions place increasing stress on the already significant burden that orthopedic trauma poses on national health services. objectives the aim of this study was to review a ser...

Fibrodysplasia progressiva ossificans (FPO) is an extremely rare condition characterized by abnormal heterotopic bone formation. The condition is eponymously known as 'stoneman' disease because patients can become effectively entombed within abnormal heterotopic bone. We present the first known case of a diaphyseal humeral fracture managed conservatively in an adult patient with this condition....

BACKGROUND A common argument in the recent health policy debate is that treatment is more effective among care providers with large volumes. It is challenging, however, to examine the volume-effectiveness relationship empirically. Several suggestions have recently been made for methodological improvements in the examination of the volume-effectiveness relationship. The aim of this study is to d...

Transient anisocoria is rare during blowout fracture reconstruction. We report a case of transient anisocoria occurring during medial blowout fracture reconstruction and review the relevant literature. A 54-year-old woman was struck in the face and was admitted for a medial blowout fracture of the left eye. During the operation, persistent bleeding occurred. To control this bleeding, a 1% lidoc...

OBJECTIVE To investigate conditions where, after initially negative plain x rays following trauma, there subsequently proves to be fracture, and to explore ways in which the management might be improved. DESIGN A 16 month prospective study. Patient details were collected from accident and emergency (A&E) review clinics and returns, A&E ward admissions, correspondence from other services, and ...

Measures of many geophysical phenomena are fractal. One of these is fracture spacing along a rock face. For the most part, the only parameter that has been extracted from such a fractal data set is its dimension. However, fractals which are strictly self-similar can be succinctly described mathematically as an Iterated Function System (IFS). In this case the parameters of the functions of an IF...

Heterogeneous populations of microsomes obtained from normal and dystrophic chicken pectoralis muscle were separated into two subfractions by an iterative loading technique. The buoyant density of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) microsomes was increased after loading them with calcium oxalate. Several incubations in the transport medium were necessary to load all of the SR. The fraction that di...

We have developed a procedure to isolate, from skeletal muscle, enriched terminal cisternae of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), which retain morphologically intact junctional "feet" structures similar to those observed in situ. The fraction is largely devoid of transverse tubule, plasma membrane, mitochondria, triads (transverse tubules junctionally associated with terminal cisternae), and longitud...
