Proteinase, lipase and alpha-glucosidase activity in 81 clinically isolated Candida strains grown in nutrient-restricted media were comparatively measured, and the correlation between inducible enzyme activity and fungal growth was analyzed. Enzyme activity was assayed by colorimetric methods. Extracellular proteinase activity was significantly higher in Candida albicans, followed by C. parapsi...

One hundred and one bacterial fungal strains were isolated from 31 soil 13 water samples of different arsenic contaminated areas in Jessore district, Bangladesh by using standard isolation procedures (Ahmad et al., 1997). Organisms stored, preserved maintained culture media the interaction these microorganisms with was studied

Most fungal genomes are poorly annotated, and many fungal traits of industrial and biomedical relevance are not well suited to classical genetic screens. Assigning genes to phenotypes on a genomic scale thus remains an urgent need in the field. We developed an approach to infer gene function from expression profiles of wild fungal isolates, and we applied our strategy to the filamentous fungus ...

The oligosaccharide OligoG, an alginate derived from seaweed, has been shown to have anti-bacterial and anti-biofilm properties and potentiates the activity of selected antibiotics against multi-drug resistant bacteria. The ability of OligoG to perturb fungal growth and potentiate conventional antifungal agents was evaluated using a range of pathogenic fungal strains. Candida (n = 11) and Asper...

The present study is vital to the understanding of bioremediation of structurally different azo dyes by some unusual Brown-rot fungi. Bioremoval of each dye (20 mg l(-1)) was tested in two different culture media under static and shaking conditions by taking inocula from different fungi. Fungal strains showed varying dyes removal abilities, though considerable high in case of Acid Red (AR) 151(...

Effects of biodiversity on productivity are more likely to be expressed when there is greater potential for niche complementarity. In soil, chemically complex pools of nutrient resources should provide more opportunities for niche complementarity than chemically simple pools. Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal genotypes can exhibit substantial variation in nutrient acquisition traits and are key comp...

The complete genome sequences of three endophytic Streptomyces species were compared. Strains EN16, EN23, and EN27 were isolated from surface-sterilized roots of wheat plants from South Australia. In field trials, these strains are effective in suppressing fungal root diseases of wheat when added as spore coatings to wheat seed.

A detailed study of the biotransformation of 6- and 7-methoxyflavones by four fungal strains (Aspergillus niger strains MB, KB, and SBP; Penicillium chermesinum 113) was carried out. Products of demethylation and also demethylation combined with hydroxylation at C-4' were identified. The biotransformation products were stronger antioxidants than the substrates.

The mycotoxin Citrinin was obtained from the fungus Penicillium citrinum. It was tested for it's Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) against some gram positive strains viz. Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus subtillis, Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Lactobacillus arabinosus and gram negative strains E.Coli, Shigella dysenteriae, shigella sonn...

We describe a calorimetric assay for detection of voriconazole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus within 8 h. Among 27 genetically distinct strains, all 21 resistant and all 6 susceptible strains were correctly identified by measurement of fungal heat production in the presence of voriconazole. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the potential of microcalorimetry for rapid detection of azole ...
