In the present work, we studied the genetic diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates from patients according to their gender, age, and geographic location in Mexico. We did not observe any statistically significant differences in regard to age or gender. We found that spoligo international type 53 (SIT53) is more frequent in the northern states and that SIT119 predominates in c...

Listeria monocytogenes is worldwide a pathogen, but the geographic distribution of clones remains largely unknown. Genotyping of 300 isolates from the 5 continents and diverse sources showed the existence of few prevalent and globally distributed clones, some of which include previously described epidemic clones. Cosmopolitan distribution indicates the need for genotyping standardization.

Optimal management of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) disease requires accurate quantitation of viral RNA concentrations in plasma. Evidence for increasing geographic intermixing of HIV-1 subtypes makes equivalent quantitation of all subtypes essential. The performances of six quantitative viral RNA tests are described, for the first time, with calibrated viral isolates of diverse s...

We analyzed whole-genome sequences of 8 enterovirus A71 isolates (EV-A71). We confirm the circulation of genogroup C and the new genogroup E in West Africa. Our analysis demonstrates wide geographic circulation and describes genetic exchanges between EV-A71 and autochthonous EV-A that might contribute to the emergence of pathogenic lineages.

To further assess the geographic occurrence, possible vectors, and prevalence of Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, we analyzed spleen tissues from 276 voles trapped close to human settlements in France; 5 were infected with the organism. Sequencing showed the isolates carried the same genotype as the bacteria that caused disease in humans and animals elsewhere in Europe.

Of 90 clinical isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans studied, 3 were determined to be serotype B/C. The patients from whom these B/C isolates were obtained were identified as never having lived in or visited the areas associated with B/C serotypes. This finding suggests a broader geographic distribution of this serotype group than previously believed. The glycine-cycloheximide-phenol red medium d...

Detailed analysis has been performed over many years of a geographic and temporal cohort of cats naturally infected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Molecular analysis of FeLV present in the diseased tissues and application of those viruses to experimental systems has revealed unique isolates with distinctive disease potential, previously uncharacterized virus-receptor interactions, informati...

Coagulase activity was detected in 99% of 225 strains of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. These strains included isolates from a variety of animal and environmental sources. Activity could be detected by the tube or slide technique, with the tube reactions being easier to interpret. Coagulation of rabbit and/or bovine plasma was observed, with most strains reacting in both. The activity appeared t...

Colletotrichum truncatum is an extremely important fungal pathogen. It can cause diseases both in humans and in over 460 plant species. However, little is known about its genetic diversity within and among populations. One of the major plant hosts of C. truncatum is pepper, and China is one of the main pepper-producing countries in the world. Here, we propose the hypotheses that geography has a...

Using geographic information system and molecular tools, we characterized a possible outbreak of tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing strain in 17 patients in Cotonou, Benin, during July 2005-October 2006. Most patients lived or worked in the same area and frequented the same local drinking bar. The isolates were streptomycin resistant.
