The measurement of dynamic blood pressure has been of interest to physiologists and physicians since 1732, when Reverend Stephen Hales measured the blood pressure of a horse by using a vertical glass tube . Methodology has advanced impressively since Reverend Hales's day, but with increased technical capability has come greater complexity of instrumentation, so that few physicians today have a ...

Wearable devices such as Google Glass can provide an efficient way to get around users’ information. We present Face Card – a system builds on Google Glass to provide information-sharing service with around people. With a look at Google Glass, users can quickly get information of nearby and coming users. Utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and proper user interface, Face Card demonstrates the ...

Recent Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology is attracting more and more attention and interest in the industry. VoIP applications such as IP telephony systems involve sending voice transmissions as data packets over private or public IP networks as well as reassembled and decoded on the receiving side. Security concerns are always the major barrier that prevents many businesses from e...

In this study, the effects of different parameters on charpy impact properties of pure and hybrid composite laminates reinforced with basalt and glass filaments were investigated. For this purpose, five types of basalt and glass laminates with quasi-isotropic stacking sequence, namely, a pure basalt, a pure glass, two inter-ply hybrid and one intra-ply hybrid composites were produced...

Despite the long history of the use of laminated glass in buildings there is concern with some architects on the potential for serious delamination issues with laminated glass. This paper provides test data on the edge stability of laminated glass and details various types of delamination problems, which can arise if proper glass processing and installation practices are not followed. Guidance ...

A comparative study of vortex phase diagrams in two weakly pinned low Tc superconductors, Ca3Rh4Sn13 (CaRhSn) and Yb3Rh4Sn13 (YbRhSn), is presented. In CaRhSn, we can witness a disorder-driven transition via the phenomenon of second magnetization peak whose field-temperature dependence is analogous to that often discussed in the context of a Bragg glass (BG) to vortex glass (VG) transition.

A model is derived for the viscoelastic response of glasses at isothermal uniaxial deformation with small strains. A glass is treated as an ensemble of relaxing units with various activation energies for rearrangement. With reference to the energylandscape concept, the rearrangement process is thought of as a series of hops of relaxing units (trapped in their potential wells on the energy lands...

This chapter reviews Cooley’s idea of the looking glass self, and Goffman’s elaboration. It can be formulated as a conjecture that links two concepts: shared awareness and the social emotions. Cooley assumed that we live in the minds of others, and named pride and shame as the emotions that resulted. Goffman added embarrassment and humiliation. His basic work, Presentation of Self in Everyday L...
