Bordetella pertussis was isolated from a culture of blood from a 31-year-old man with Wegener's granulomatosis. The organism was detected with the BACTEC 9240 system after 6 days of incubation and was confirmed as B. pertussis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To our knowledge, this is the first published report of the recovery of B. pertussis from blood.
OBJECTIVE An association between therapeutic inhibition of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and solid malignancies was observed during the Wegener's Granulomatosis Etanercept Trial (WGET), which included 180 patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's) (GPA). The present study was conducted to determine the malignancy risk beyond the time of exposure to study therapy. METHODS The occ...

We hereby describe the satisfactory evolution of rituximab treatment in two patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). Rituximab was indicated for refractoriness to standard treatment in one case and life-threatening myelotoxicity due to alkylating agents in the other. A brief review of previous experience with the use of rituximab in the treatment of WG is presented.
Salivary gland involvement is a rare presenting clinical feature of Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). Early recognition and identification of any unusual presentations of WG may enable the early commencement of appropriate treatment. We report a case in which the initial manifestation of the disease was parotid gland swelling, and discuss the management of the patient. WG should be considered in t...
Two patients with Wegener's granulomatosis are described in whom the sputum was found to contain abnormal cells, The diagnosis was suggested in the second case on cytological grounds alone. It is considered, therefore, that sputum cytology is a relevant investigation in the diagnosis of this condition.
Granulomatous lesions of the skin produced by beryllium compounds were first described by Grier, Nash, and Freiman (1948), but no case occurring in this country has yet been published. As interest in the effects of exposure to beryllium has grown with the increased use of this metal during the last decade, a case of multiple beryllium granulomatosis of the skin occurring in a girl of 20 years i...
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), a malignant vascular tumor, can develop in patients who receive corticosteroids or immunosuppressive therapy. We report a patient with KS and granulomatosis polyangiitis (GPA). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report regarding the co-occurrence of these two diseases. The physician must be aware of the risk of cancer in patients with rheumatism.
