The paper describes new approaches in computational cartography to assist online map portrayal e.g., in web map and location-based services. Such services demand increasing levels of flexibility to support portrayal operations such as the on-the-fly combination (conflation) of data from different sources in response to ad hoc database queries and dynamic generalisation of information in respons...

Grid computing aggregates heterogeneous resources for executing resource intensive applications of science and engineering. Grid scheduling is a complex problem (NP-hard) to map existing tasks to accessible storage and computational resources to utilize them in the optimistic manner. In this article, we have analyzed the grid scheduling problem, the process of job scheduling, challenges and app...

Smart grid is a new approach for electric power grid that uses information and communications technology to control the electric power grid. Smart grid provides real-time control of the electric power grid, controlling the direction of power flow or time of the flow. Control devices are installed on the power lines of the electric power grid to implement smart grid. The number of the control de...

A neural model proposes how entorhinal grid cells and hippocampal place cells may develop as spatial categories in a hierarchy of self-organizing maps (SOMs). The model responds to realistic rat navigational trajectories by learning both grid cells with hexagonal grid firing fields of multiple spatial scales, and place cells with one or more firing fields, that match neurophysiological data abo...

A grid polygon is a polygon whose vertices are points of a grid. We define an injective map between permutations of length n and a subset of grid polygons on n vertices, which we call consecutive-minima polygons. By the kernel method, we enumerate sets of permutations whose consecutive-minima polygons satisfy specific geometric conditions. We deal with 2-variate and 3-variate generating functions.

The average ridge distance of "ngerprint images is used in many problems and applications. It is used in "ngerprint "lter design or in identi"cation and classi"cation procedures. This paper addresses the problem of local average ridge distance computation. This computation is based on a two-step procedure: "rst, the average distance is de"ned in each signi"cant portion of the image and then thi...

Scientific workflows are being developed for many domains as a paradigm to manage complex scientific computations. In our work, we are challenged with efficiently generating and validating workflows that contain large amounts (hundreds to thousands) of individual computations to be executed over distributed environments. We describe a new approach to workflow creation and validation that uses s...
