The actions of lophotoxin on synaptic acetylcholine receptors were investigated, using the cholinergic synapse between the lateral filiform hair sensory neurone and giant interneurone 3 in the first-instar cockroach Periplaneta americana. Lophotoxin (1-Oxl0~moll~) blocked transmission without affecting the passive or active membrane properties of the preand postsynaptic neurones, and without af...

Merkel cells (MC) are specialized epithelial cells, having sensory and neuroendocrine functions, and present within basal layers of epidermis (disseminated as well as clustered in Pinkus’s hair disc), and outer root sheath of hair follicles of men (Moll et al, 1986, 1993, 1995; Halata, 1993). In mice, numerous MC are present in the foot pad epidermis, whereas in the epidermis of back skin MC ar...

The in vitro activity of ACHN-490, a novel aminoglycoside ("neoglycoside"), was evaluated against 102 multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, including a subset of 25 strains producing the KPC carbapenemase. MIC50 values for gentamicin, tobramycin, and amikacin were 8 microg/ml, 32 microg/ml, and 2 microg/ml, respectively; MIC90 values for the same antimicrobials were > or = 64...

BACKGROUND The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) recently elected to adjust the previous piperacillin susceptibility breakpoint of ≤64 µg/mL against Pseudomonas aeruginosa to ≤16 µg/mL, based largely on pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) modeling studies. Data on whether PK-PD modeling correlates with clinical outcomes in children are needed before resorting to broader cla...

T. Amdeberhan, V. De Angelis, and V.H. Moll study the arithmetical properties of the complementary Bell numbers using an infinite matrix P whose basis is the falling factorials. This paper constructs a similar matrix whose basis is the rising factorials and parallels many of the same results.

We prove that the zeros of the polynomials Pm(a) of degree m, defined by Borosh and Moll via Pm(a) = 2m+3/2 π (a + 1) Z ∞ 0 dx (x4 + 2ax2 + 1)m+1 , approach the lemniscate {ζ ∈ C : |ζ − 1| = 1, Rζ < 0}, as m diverges.

Stimulated by earlier work by Moll and his coworkers [1], we evaluate various basic log Gamma integrals in terms of partial derivatives of Tornheim– Witten zeta functions and their extensions arising from evaluations of Fourier series. In particular, we fully evaluate

We study the properties of a logconcavity operator on a symmetric, unimodal subset of finite sequences. In doing so we are able to prove that there is a large unbounded region in this subset that is ∞-logconcave. This problem was motivated by the conjecture of Moll and Boros in [1] that the binomial coefficients are ∞-logconcave.

The activity of ABT-773, a novel ketolide antibiotic, against clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria was determined and compared to the activities of other antimicrobial agents. MICs at which 90% of isolates were inhibited (MIC(90)s) were </=0.06 microg/ml for Actinomyces spp., Clostridium perfringens, Peptostreptococcus spp., Propionibacterium spp., and Porphyromonas spp. The MIC(50)s and MIC...
