This paper introduces a new pedagogical tool using haptic feedback and visual analogy, to improve perception and learning of nanoscale phenomena, for people without prior knowledge of nanophysics. This tool is a haptic and virtual-reality simulator of a foremost onedimensional nanophysical phenomenon: the approach-retract cycle of an Atomic Force Microcope (AFM) probe, with a force-feedback dev...
A new tracing algorithm is described that supports haptic rendering of NURBS surfaces without the use of any intermediate representation. By using this tracing algorithm in conjunction with algorithms for surface proximity testing and surface transitions, a complete haptic rendering system for sculptured models has been developed. The system links an advanced CAD modeling system with a Sarcos f...
The objective of this work is to study the relevance of haptic feedback in remote communication between people. The application is handwriting. A haptic device designed to help people to improve their writing skills is presented. Two experimental sessions are then proposed to a group of people. In the first test, two subjects communicate through a bilateral system by means of a haptic feedback ...
This paper describes an adaptive learning environment with an open learner model to promote learner reflection. The learner model can be presented using different techniques: textual and haptic. The paper investigates the potential for haptic learner models in terms of whether users can understand a haptic model, and whether they find it useful. Most liked both versions, but of those with a pre...
Haptic technology has great potentials in many applications. This paper introduces our work on delivery haptic information via the Web. A multimodal tool has been developed to allow blind people to create virtual graphs independently. Multimodal interactions in the process of graph creation and exploration are provided by using a low-cost haptic device, the Logitech WingMan Force Feedback Mouse...
Using a force feedback device within the framework of deformable object simulation remains difficult because of the incompatibility between the computation time needed by realistic deformable models and high refresh frequencies necessary for real-time haptic rendering. Giving the user a good haptic sensation requires refreshing the applied forces at least ten times more often than for giving a ...
Haptic feedback has a role to play in mobile display of information, with its potential for enriching technology interactions, offloading vision, and providing low-attention or eyes-free communication with networked information and other users. However, without careful and perceptually informed design, it will become just another annoying distraction; and our current knowledge of both haptic pe...
We present the results of an experimental study of Haptic Digital Audio Effects with and without force feedback. Participants experienced through a low cost Falcon haptic device two new real-time physical audio effect models we have developed under the CORDIS-ANIMA formalism. The results indicate that the haptic modality changed the user’s experience significantly.
In this paper, we discuss a haptically enhanced multimedia broadcasting system. Four stages of a proposed system are briefly analyzed: scene capture, haptic editing, data transmission, and display with haptic interaction. In order to show usefulness of the proposed system, some potential scenarios with haptic interaction are listed. These scenarios are classified into passive and active haptic ...
