The Alice and LHCb collaborations equipped their detectors with many technologies to identify particles in a large momentum range, both in the barrel and the forward regions. The methods used are described and some details on the hardware implementation are given. A few physics results illustrate the performances obtained by the two detectors.

As the offshore market faces deepwater production challenges, the oil and gas industry is investing in new technologies to bring down the costs in the subsea fields exploitation. A breakthrough technology solution is the development of a subsea centrifugal compressor module installed on the seabed, transporting the wellstream to a central platform or directly to shore. The typical application o...

The EA Sports Player Performance Index is a rating system for soccer players used in the top two tiers of soccer in England—the Premier League and the Championship. Its development was a collaboration among professional soccer leagues, a news media association, and academia. In this paper, we describe the index and its construction. The novelty of the index lies in its attempts to rate all play...

In this paper, alternative approaches to structure the parametric geometry in relation to information on various performances are described and exemplified. They relate to different levels of knowledge that concern the performances considered in the process and which are available to the designer while the parametric model is being set. A theoretic framework embeds the different approaches, for...

An intention to adopt IP protocol for future mobile communication and subsequent extension of Internet services to the air interface calls for advanced performance modeling approaches. To provide a tool for accurate performance evaluation of IP-based applications running over the wireless channels we propose a novel cross-layer wireless channel modeling approach. We extend the small-scale propa...

Abstract: Let Y be a Gaussian vector of R of mean s and diagonal covariance matrix Γ. Our aim is to estimate both s and the entries σi = Γi,i, for i = 1, . . . , n, on the basis of the observation of two independent copies of Y . Our approach is free of any prior assumption on s but requires that we know some upper bound γ on the ratio maxi σi/mini σi. For example, the choice γ = 1 corresponds ...

Recognition of foreign accented speech remains among the most difficult tasks in automatic speech recognition. It was observed that using models trained on foreign data together with native models improves the recognition for speakers with foreign accent. However such an approach degrades the recognition performances on native speakers. In order to avoid such performance degradation the degree ...

In this paper, we investigate a new style for presenting information. We introduce the notion of presentation teams which – rather than addressing the user directly – convey information in the style of performances to be observed by the user. The paper presents an approach to the automated generation of such performances which has been tested in two different application scenarios, car sales di...

This paper summarizes the design and performances of recent breeding blanket concepts and identifies the key material issues associated with them. An assessment of different classes of concepts is carried out by balancing out the potential performance of the concepts with the risk associated with the required material development. Finally, an example strategy for blanket development is discusse...

As part of a larger project to examine variables perceived to influence performance in Olympic competition, this manuscript was designed to (a) report coaches’ perceptions of variables influencing Olympic athlete performance, (b) triangulate findings from surveys and interviews with Olympic athletes, and (c) examine coaches’ perceptions of variables influencing Olympic coaching effectiveness. S...
