We have recently shown in mice that four members of the T-box family of transcription factors (Tbx2-Tbx5) are expressed in developing limb buds, and that expression of two of these genes, Tbx4 and Tbx5, is primarily restricted to the developing hindlimbs and forelimbs, respectively. In this report, we investigate the role of these genes in limb specification and development, using the chick as ...

The positional signal localized to the posterior (zone of polarizing activity or ZPA) region of the vertebrate limb is transiently expressed during development and a decline in ZPA signaling is accelerated when posterior cells are dissociated and cultured in vitro. The evidence that cultured posterior cells display a precocious decline in ZPA signaling when compared to in vivo studies suggests ...

Cellular adhesion is fundamental to the behaviour of cell populations during embryonic development and serves to establish correct tissue pattern and architecture. The cadherin superfamily of cell adhesion proteins regulates cellular organization and additionally influences intracellular signalling cascades. Here we present for the first time a detailed account of chick Fat-1 gene expression du...

Rat hind limb buds, aged between prenatal days 14 and 18, were used for electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry of fibronectin, laminin and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling staining indicative of DNA fragmentation. Fibronectin and laminin were actively synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum of epidermal cells in the apical ectodermal ridge...

we investigated sexual size dimorphism in the tree frog, hyla savignyi using 33 males and 22 females from the western and northwestern regions of kermanshah province, western iran. out of sixteen measured morphometric characters, four were significantly larger in females than in males. these characters were nostrileye length, brachium length, elbowlongest finger length and hind limb length.

Composite tissue allotransplantation (CTA) now represents a valid therapeutic option after the loss of a hand, forearm or digits and has become a novel therapeutic entity in reconstructive surgery. However, long term high-dose multi-drug immunosuppressive therapy is required to ensure graft survival, bearing the risk of serious side effects which halters broader application. Further progression...

The purpose of this study was to simultaneously isolate skeletal muscle plasma and microsomal membranes from the hind limbs of male Sprague-Dawley rats perfused either in the absence or presence of 20 milliunits/ml insulin and to determine the effect of insulin on the number and distribution of glucose transporters in these membrane fractions. Insulin increased hind limb glucose uptake greater ...
