Size-selective pores in the shells of hollow polymer nanocapsules enable combined assembly and entrapment of molecules. Small building blocks enter the capsule through the pores. The assembled molecules, which are larger than the pores, remain entrapped in the nanocapsules. Porous nanometre-thin walls permit unhindered functionalization of entrapped molecules.

Nanoparticles (NPs, diameter range of 1–100 nm) can have sizedependent physical and electronic properties that are useful in a variety of applications. Arranging them into hollow shells introduces the additional functionalities of encapsulation, storage, and controlled release that the constituent NPs do not have. This chapter examines recent developments in the synthesis routes and properties o...

Hollow spherical nanoparticles with ordered mesoporous silica shells were fabricated by evaporation-induced self-assembly using (NH(4))(2)SO(4) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as templates. The model drug, L-methionine, was encapsulated within the spherical void at high loadings by repeated crystallization.

A simple approach was proposed to synthesize three types of ellipsoidal hollow nanostructures whose shells are assembled from anatase TiO(2) nanosheets (NSs) with exposed (001) facets. Among them, ellipsoid Fe(3)O(4)@TiO(2)-NS nanorattles can be readily generated as a magnetically separable photocatalyst with enhanced activity through in situ reduction of the α-Fe(2)O(3) core.

Cellulose microbeads can be used as immobilization supports. We report on the design and preparation of magneto-responsive cellulose microbeads and microcapsules by self-assembled shells of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) carrying magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, that is, a mixture of isotropic and anisotropic nanomaterials. The magnetic CNCs formed a structured layer, a mesh, consisting of CNCs an...

Hollow vesicular tissues of various sizes and shapes arise in biological organs such as ears, guts, hearts, brains and even entire organisms. Regulating their size and shape is crucial for their function. Although chemical signaling has been thought to play a role in the regulation of cellular processes that feed into larger scales, it is increasingly recognized that mechanical forces are invol...

Porous and hollow particles are widely used in pharmaceuticals, as solid phases for chromatography, as catalyst supports, in bioanalytical assays and medical diagnostics, and in many other applications. By controlling size, shape, and chemistry, it is possible to tune the physical and chemical properties of the particles. In some applications of millimeter-scale hollow shells, such as in high e...
