Global-scale data on the Oligocene to Recent planktic foraminifers and coccoliths from the tropical Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are employed for quantitative testing of alternative models (Red Queen and Stationary Hypotheses) of the relationship between speciation rates, extinction rates, taxonomic diversity, abiotic events, and history of the paleosystem. The results demonstrate that although ...

Genomic DNA was isolated from Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts by a specific immunomagnetic separation-in vitro excystation procedure and subjected to randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis using sequence-independent primers. An estuary C. parvum isolate was easily differentiated from several bovine isolates, while five bovine isolates of the same origin were indistinguishable from each other.

There is currently no systematic surveillance or monitoring of antibiotic resistance in Australian animals. Registration of antibiotics for use in animals is tightly controlled and has been very conservative. Fluoroquinolones have not been registered for use in food producing animals and other products have been removed from the market because of human health concerns. In the late 1970s, the An...

Previous reports have indicated that a small proportion of cattle shedding high levels of Escherichia coli O157:H7 is the main source for transmission of this organism between animals. Cattle achieving a fecal shedding status of 10(4) CFU of E. coli O157:H7/gram or greater are now referred to as supershedders. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of E. coli O157:H7 strain t...

AIMS To determine the prevalence and molecular characteristics of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) isolates from bovine mastitic milk in Brazil. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 2144 milk samples from dairy cattle showing mastitis were screened for the presence of E. coli. A total of 182 E. coli isolates were selected and examined. All were subjected to dot blot analysis using the ...

The present study aimed at the assessment of genetic relatedness among the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates of bovine and human origin. A set of twenty-four MRSA isolates obtained from cattle (11), buffaloes (10) and their handlers (3) were subjected to PCR-ribotyping using primers specific for 16S-23S ribosomal spacer region. Polymorphism was observed with 23 ribotyp...

conclusions in this study, the l-lps immune response of bovine cells was significant, indicating that tlr2 is the predominant receptor for l-lps. due to l-lps endotoxin-like activity, we found a strategy through using bmap-28 to prevent l-lps-induced tlr2-dependent immune activation in bovine cells. materials and methods in this study, l-lps-induced proinflammatory cytokine production in bovine...

AIM The present study was undertaken to characterize the mutation in gyrA (DNA gyrase) and parC (topoisomerase IV) genes responsible for fluoroquinolone resistance in Escherichia coli isolates associated with the bovine mastitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 92 milk samples from bovine mastitis cases were sampled in and around Puducherry (Southern India). Among these samples, 30 isolates ...

Two new isolates of bovine lentivirus, also known as bovine immunodeficiency-like virus (BIV), were obtained from a seropositive cattle herd in Florida. This is the first report of new isolates of BIV since the original BIV strain, R29, was isolated in 1969. The two new BIV isolates were derived from blood buffy coat cells cocultivated in vitro with fetal bovine lung cell cultures. The new isol...
