Cellulose nanofibrils have been proposed for novel barrier concepts, based on their capability to form smooth, strong and transparent films, with high oxygen barrier properties. A series of cellulose-based films were manufactured and tested with respect to their oxygen transmission rate (OTR) capabilities. The obtained OTR levels were considerably better than the levels recommended for packagin...

In this review article, we address how activity-dependent Ca(2+)signaling is crucial for hippocampal synaptic/structural plasticity and discuss how changes in neuronal oxidative state affect Ca(2+)signaling and synaptic plasticity. We also analyze current evidence indicating that oxidative stress and abnormal Ca(2+)signaling contribute to age-related synaptic plasticity deterioration.

Addition of fluoroarenes, fluoroalkanes or benzofuran to [{(2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3NCMe)2CH}Al] results in facile oxidative addition of either a C-F or C-O bond to the Al(I) centre.

Identifying effective means to improve the electrochemical performance of oxygen-evolution catalysts represents a significant challenge in several emerging renewable energy technologies. Herein, we consider metal-nitrogen-carbon sheets which are commonly used for catalyzing the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR), as the support to load NiO nanoparticles for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER). FeN...

OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate the effectiveness and the good outcome of the patients treated with helium-oxygen (Heliox) mixture. This mixture (Heliox) has been used in patients with airway obstruction, from different ethiologies, who did not respond to a conventional treatment with oxygen. METHODS: Case report of five patients that received Heliox as treatment for airway obstruction. All of them had ...

Measurements of cerebral blood flow (CBF) were performed using the microsphere technique in non-human primates (baboons) to assess the effect of non-radioactive xenon gas inhalation on CBF. Blood flows in small tissue volumes (approximately 1 cm3) were directly measured before and during the inhalation of xenon/oxygen gas mixtures. The results of these studies demonstrated that when inhaled in ...

BACKGROUND The continuous infusion of prostacyclin has been shown to improve exercise capacity and survival in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH). Inhalation of iloprost, a stable analog of prostacyclin, might be an alternative therapy for PPH, selectively acting on the pulmonary vascular bed through ventilation-matched alveolar deposition of the drug. We investigated the short-...

Preganglionic cervical and splanchnic sympathetic activity was recorded before and during administration of inhalation anaesthetics, in rabbits ventilated with oxygen and given gallamine. During control periods, when light anaesthesia was maintained with pentobarbitone, sympathetic discharge responded to changes in arterial pressure. Increased arterial Pco3 exaggerated the amplitude of the resp...

The ratio of the right ventricular preejection period to the right ventricular ejection time was calculated from the echocardiogram of the pulmonic valve before and after inhalation of a high concentration of oxygen in pulmonary hypertensive patients. The results showed that this non-invasive method could differentiate pulmonary vascular disease from non-pulmonary vascular disease and hence use...

Endotracheal intubation and intermittent positive pressure ventilation were used to overcome the difficulties of oxygen therapy for pneumatosis cystoides coli in a 9-year-old child with Down's syndrome and a congenital heart defect. As compared to previously reported cases, a shorter duration of treatment and a lower arterial oxygen tension proved successful.
