Thiazide-induced hyponatremia is one of the main causes of decreased sodium levels in elderly individuals. This review presents the current evidence regarding the thiazide-associated hyponatremia. Thiazide-associated hyponatremia is observed mainly in patients with certain risk factors such as those receiving large doses of thiazides, having much comorbidity, such as heart failure, liver diseas...
Abstract We report a case of paint thinner intoxication by inhalation, with rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, skin lesions and severe sciatic nerve lesion at gluteal region.
Influenza virus infection is with initial symptoms with fever, dry cough and muscle soreness. In some cases, influenza virus infection also brings complications with neurologic problems, heart diseases, hypoxemic respiratory failure, etc. Rhabdomyolysis, which precipitated by compression injury, alcohol ingestion or seizures, leads to acute kidney injury with myoglobinuria and elevated serum cr...
It is important to rapidly diagnosis and treat rhabdomyolysis in order to decrease morbidity and mortality. To date there are no reports in the emergency medicine literature on the use of point-of-care ultrasound in the diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis. This unique case describes how ultrasound was used in the emergency department (ED) to quickly diagnose and treat rhabdomyolysis prior to confirmati...
Hyponatremia is a relatively common electrolyte disorder. Although severe acute hyponatremia following coronary angiography is rare, potentially lethal neurologic manifestations may result. We describe a patient with severe, symptomatic hyponatremia, an unusual complication of coronary angiography. Lack of familiarity with contrast media-related hyponatremia caused a delay in diagnosis and ther...
Severe rhabdomyolysis is associated with morbidity and mortality. We report on a previously well male who developed severe rhabdomyolysis, sepsis, and multi-organ failure. The patient made a complete recovery. Extensive microbiological testing was only positive for RSV, making this the first reported case of adult RSV-related rhabdomyolysis in the literature.
Dear Editor, The review by Aimee Lee, MD, and associates mentions various risks for falls in the elderly population. However, an important point is missing. Emerging literature shows that chronic hyponatremia increases the adjusted odds ratio for falls and is now recognized as an important factor for increased falls and fractures in the elderly. This is true even for mild hyponatremia, which is...
BACKGROUND Patients with moderate to severe hypothyroidism and mainly patients with myxedema may exhibit reduced sodium levels (<135 mmol/L). SUMMARY The aim of this short review is the presentation of the mechanisms of hyponatremia and of the available data regarding its implications and treatment in patients with hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is one of the causes of hyponatremia, thus thyr...
STUDY OBJECTIVE To describe the syndrome of exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis and to investigate the relation between exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis and the development of acute renal failure. DESIGN Retrospective chart analysis on all patients with a discharge diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis from January 1988 to January 1993. SETTING An urban tertiary care center with 225,000 annual emergency d...
Poisoning is a common cause of hospitalization in young individuals that can lead to rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome fallowing rupture of plasma membrane of skeletal muscle cells and release of cellular contents into plasma. The classic triad of rhabdomyolysis includes myalgia, muscle weakness and teacolored urine secondary to myoglobinuria. Rhabdomyolysis is defined as increase in...
