Crossed Immunoelectrophoresis of Membrane Proteins from Acholeplasma laidlawii and Spiroplasma citri
Clinical isolates of Branhamella catarrhalis from the sputum of 20 patients with acute bronchopulmonary infection were examined for synthesis of immunoglobulin A1 protease by immunoelectrophoresis. Ten strains produced beta-lactamase, and 10 were beta-lactamase negative. None of the strains demonstrated immunoglobulin A1 protease activity despite the fact that three different culture media were...
Crossed-line immunoelectrophoresis of cytoplasmic extracts of eight Candida species and Saccharomyces cerevisiae demonstrated the presence of antigens reactive with a rabbit antiserum to a C. albicans extract in all species except C. glabrata. A previously defined major cytoplasmic antigen of C. albicans was also present in C. tropicalis and C. guilliermondii.
Hydatid antigen was demonstrated for the first time in the urine of patients with hydatid disease by countercurrent immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP). The antigen was detected in the concentrated urine of 7 of 16 (43.75% positive) patients with surgically confirmed hydatid disease, 4 of 10 (40% positive) patients with ultrasound-proven hydatid disease (daughter cysts or prominent septation and hydat...
Four races of soybean cyst nematodes (SCN), Heterodera glycines, have been described in tile United States (2), and many other variations have been demonstrated (4). T h e races have been reported to be morphologically and serologically identical (5). However, since the races interact differently when inoculated to different cultivars of soybeans, there should be some biochemical differences. T...
Counter immunoelectrophoresis using cellulose acetate as the supporting medium was used as a rapid screening test for amoebic abscess. All the sera from 40 cases gave positive results. No false positives were obtained, but the results in intestinal amoebiasis were less reliable. An attempt was made to account for discrepancies in previous reports.
Two strains of Mycoplasma were isolated from synovial fluids of arthritic feeder cattle and were identified as Mycoplasma agalactiae subsp. bovis by growth inhibition and fluorescent antibody tests. The strains (Iowa 1136 and Nebraska 2) could not be distinguished from known strains (Donetta and California 01) by immunoelectrophoresis or by agar gel precipitation.
