Serum factors reactive with human heart or extracts of human heart have been found by a number of investigators utilizing a variety of immunologic techniques (1-7). Kaplan, Meyeserian, and Kushner (8) have demonstrated reactive factors in the sera of patients with acute rheumatic fever and certain other diseases by an immunofluorescent technique. The present study, using the immunofluorescent m...

We report 2 patients with invasive aspergillosis after infection with pandemic (H1N1) 2009. Influenza viruses are known to cause immunologic defects and impair ciliary clearance. These defects, combined with high-dose corticosteroids prescribed during influenza-associated adult respiratory distress syndrome, may be novel risk factors predisposing otherwise immunocompetent patients to invasive a...

The current knowledge of the immunologic and etiologic factors which play a role in rheumatoid arthritis is reviewed and extrapolated to the systemic effects of rheumatoid disease. The disease process is viewed as the incidental result of an atypical immuno-inflammatory mechanism initiated by an unidentified antigenic stimulus.

Cancer in terms of its origin was still a mystery. It has multiple etiologic factors, including ineffectiveness of immunologic surveillance. The distribution of human cancers points to a progressive accumulation of somatic genetic error. Sir Macfarlane Burnet has made immense contributions in the field of cancer surveillance. This paper analyses how the old masters were watching out for the hid...

Acne, one of the most common skin diseases, is caused by multiple factors, including Propionibacterium acnes. Studies suggest that responses to P. acnes by host immunity play important roles in its pathogenesis. Identifying immune modulators that attenuate inflammatory responses against P. acnes and the inhibition of bacterial growth may lead to novel avenues of immunologic intervention.
