This paper provides algebraic criteria for the number of inductors and capacitors which must be present in a realisation of a given electrical impedance function. The criteria are expressed in terms of the rank and signature of the associated Hankel, or Sylvester, or Bezoutian matrix, or equivalently in terms of an extended Cauchy index.
