Analytical modeling plays a crucial role in the analysis and design of computer systems. Stochastic Petri Nets represent a powerful paradigm, widely used for such modeling in the context of dependability, performance and performability. Many structural and stochastic extensions have been proposed in recent years to increase their modeling power, or their capability to handle large systems. This...

The model-checking problem for 1-safe Petri nets and linear-time temporal logic (LTL) consists of deciding, given a 1-safe Petri net and a formula of LTL, whether the Petri net satisses the property encoded by the formula. This paper introduces a semidecision test for this problem. By a semidecision test we understand a procedure which may answer`yes', in which case the Petri net satisses the p...

This contribution discusses the application of Petri nets for modeling workflow in healthcare based on a normative language approach. After a brief introduction, a framework of different abstraction levels covering clinical workflow representation to workflow implementation is presented. In order to use the object Petri nets formalism for clinical workflow representation at the conceptual level...

Algebraic Petri nets as deened by Reisig 15] lack a feature for modelling distributed network algorithms, viz. exible arcs. In this paper we equip algebraic Petri nets with exible arcs and we call the resulting extension algebraic system nets. We demonstrate that algebraic system nets are better suited for modelling distributed algorithms. Besides this practical motivation for introducing algeb...

This paper proposes a method of defining and analysing robotic tasks using Petri Nets. Both the robot behaviors and environment are modelled using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPNs). Each action is modelled separately and composed with others to provide a complete task execution. The use of Petri Nets allows the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the task execution.

We discuss the similarity of a recent approach to task suspension in agent programming languages with an earlier approach to formalising preemption using a class of Petri nets, called M-nets. We argue that the theory of agent programming would benefit from adopting certain features of the Petri-net approach, and thus making further results for Petri nets applicable in the agent domain.

The aim of this survey is to introduce Computer science/Petri nets specialists to the basic system level issues brought up by the development of Flexible Manufacturing and how Petri nets are used to aid the production engineers in their work. After some terminology concerning production engineering, the hierarchical decision and control level is briefly reviewed. Finally, the role and the prese...

Extended Petri Nets have been applied to artificial intelligence reasoning processes, in areas such as planning, uncertainty reasoning, knowledgebased intelligent systems, and qualitative simulation. Creating Petri Net domain models faces the same challenges that confront all knowledge-intensive AI performance systems: model specification, knowledge acquisition, and refinement. Thus, a fundamen...

Petri nets are a fundamental model of concurrent processes and have a wide range of applications. They can be viewed as generalisation of transition systems in which concurrency is not simulated by non-deterministic interleaving. They were invented by C. A. Petri in the 60's. (A reference work is [Br].) It can be argued that the main effort and success of Petri Net Theory has been in developing...

This paper seeks to establish within a formal framework how Coloured Petri Nets can be enhanced to produce Object Petri Nets. It does so by defining a number of intermediate Petri Net formalisms and identifying the features introduced at each step of the development. Object Petri Nets support a complete integration of object-oriented concepts into Petri Nets, including inheritance and the assoc...
