Resistance to infection with Toxoplasma gondii was studied in mice lacking CD4 expression. Such mice developed more brain cysts and survived for a shorter time than did wild-type controls after peroral infection with ME49 cysts. After immunization with the ts-4 strain of T. gondii, CD4-deficient mice exhibited impaired resistance to a challenge infection with virulent RH tachyzoites. Thus, defi...

Human platelets, in the absence of antibody, are cytotoxic to tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii as determined by vital staining, transmission electron microscopy, and the failure of Toxoplasma to survive and replicate in mice after in vitro interaction of the organisms with platelets. Platelet to T. gondii ratios as low as 1:3 were toxic to the organisms with direct cell-cell contact essential f...

OBJECTIVES To determine the frequency of antibody seropositivity of Toxoplasma gondii  infection in a cancer patient population. We also explored on association of Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity with selected variables. Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional study conducted at  Prince Faisal bin Bandar cancer center, Qassim, Saudi Arabia, from November 2014 to  March 2015. One hundred...

Background: Toxoplasma gondii, as an important food-borne protozoan parasite, occurs widely in humans and animals including domestic poultry throughout the world. The goal of this survey was to determine prevalence rate of T. gondii in free-ranging chickens sold in Tunis, Tunisia. Methods: In the present study, the prevalence of T. gondii in 40 free-range chickens (Gallus domesticus) marketed ...

PURPOSE To evaluate the susceptibility to toxoplasmosis in pregnant women in the public health service from two cities in the western region of Paraná, Brazil. METHODS Four thousand twenty-two pregnant women were evaluated for anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM by ELISA and MEIA. Seronegative pregnant women repeated the serology in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Neonatal screeni...

About 20-90% of the world's population has had contact with Toxoplasma gondii parasites. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with T. gondii infection in the Central Region, Ghana. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in three selected communities. Serum samples were tested for the presence of anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodie...

We cloned a gene, PRPI, of Toxoplasma gondii encoding a 637-amino-acids protein having a calculated mass of 70 kDa. The sequence showed high homology to parafusin, a protein that in Paramecium tetraurelia participates in Ca2+-regulated exocytosis and is a paralog of phosphoglucomutase. We show that Toxoplasma gondii homogenate and an expressed recombinant PRP1 fusion protein cross-react with a ...

Present study aims to determine probable relation between Toxoplasma gondii infection and diabetes mellitus by investigating serum levels of insulin anti-Toxoplasma antibodies through ELISA among diabetic non-diabetic persons in Lahore, Pakistan. Results showed that level was higher subjects positive for as compared free one’s (p<0.05). The analysis revealed more prevalent patients (p...

Miscellaneous imines and acyl hydrazones were prepared from 5-nitrofuraldehyde 5-nitrothiophene-2-carboxaldehyde. Their activities against Toxoplasma gondii Leishmania major parasites evaluated. Promising antiparasitic effects selectivities observed for certain imines. Cobalt(II) copper(II) complexes conserved the high anti-Toxoplasma of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic carboxyl hydrazone (2a). In additio...

The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii causes severe opportunistic infections. Here, we report an unexpected diagnosis of cerebral toxoplasmosis. T. gondii was diagnosed by 16S and D2 large-subunit (LSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequencing of a cerebral biopsy specimen and confirmed by T. gondii-specific PCR and immunohistochemistry. The patient was later diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
